Do most classes with ~40 people assign very few A’s?
I just got my grade for 2nd year inorganic chem and the class had exactly 40 people. I was expecting an A but I got an A-. The prof said only 2 people got an A… Are small classes usually like this? :(

you will live.

Well, it depends on the class. Some professors have an already outlined course grade perecentage, so if you get the required percentage (like 90%) then they will give you an A no matter what everyone else got. But sometimes they do like bell curve grade (I think thats what its called) where only certain amount of people get A’s, B’s, etc…

That sucks…

Its actually good too. If everyone is not doing so well in your class then you can get an easy A. Happened to me last semester, even though I was getting 96 percent on the tests. My Instructor told me I didnt have to come to class anymore because I will have an A no matter what.

That’s too bad about your A-. Being 3rd in a class of 40 would be an A on most any Bell curve. (S)He must have been using, as lethargytm suggested, raw score. IMO that is still not fair… but an A- is still a good grade in ORGO II

Hey. D had a seminar earlier in college that gave zero A’s. Zip. She was warned. Of course, D didn’t believe it and took it anyway. Stubborn. Confidant. Not really all that savvy. She’ll live. ;)

To the above: seminar and premed reqs are different. I also have taken a class in which the professor (philosophy) was known NOT to give A’s. I accepted this, took the class, and it was one of the best experiences I have had. I did score an A- (as expected) but the professor wrote one of my recs for med school. However, this was not a premed requirement which really should be on a bell curve…

Why should the professor care who was pre-med and who wasn’t ? Or what course was a pre-req? Are you saying they should have 2 different scales? I don’t think that’s going to fly with most prof’s.

I think he was saying that the course shouldve been on a bell curve. AND that the fact that he wasnt one of the pre req course professors would somehow not look as good on his transcript
