Small vs Large HS affect on admissions

So I was wondering if the size of your HS has any affect on admissions.

Outside of the regular "a larger HS will present more academic and EC opportunities " I mean. Generally I’d think a large HS could provide more AP/ Honors classes is what i’m saying.

But anyway what I am thinking more about is athletics and leadership positions. When Umich, or any other college, looks at your application and sees Varsity Soccer are you getting some extra “points” because you put in the work required to stay on the team or because you got on the team and therefore have sine level if skill. I day this because getting on the varsity team at a school where the graduating class in 80 is going to be much easier than a school where the graduating class is 600+ or more. A good buddy of mine up at umich was on his track and football team up at his HS and he is one of the least athletic guys I know. His class was only 65 kids though so I figured that’s how he made the team. Now my question is being on that football team comparable to being on a large HSs football team to admissions.

That goes for some ECs or leadership positions too. If there are less kids running fir something you obviously have a better chance if winning.

Or class rank, top 5 at a large school vs a small school is night and day.

Anyway that’s my rant/question at 4 am.

Wait… effect*

No one… bummer

I don’t think they look into the varsity thing that far. I think being on varsity is a (+) because of the time commitment necessary and the dedication you need to have, rather than the skill level you possess (assuming that person isn’t getting recruited), so I don’t think it would matter in terms of large or small school on the effect of being a varsity athlete.

Personally I’d say that going out for & participating in a varsity sport, marching band/ orchestra, student government, etc., shows initiative, commitment, ability to handle multiple responsibilities, work ethic, getting along with others, multi-faceted personality, etc. etc., and this is only minimally affected by the size of the high school. Yes, it’s easier to get on at a smaller school, but you still have to have the motivation & gumption to do it, and then to stick with it and be a success.

On the other hand, joining “everything” at a smaller school probably does not help. Better to join what interests you and then make a true contribution to it, as much as you can.

You are evaluated in the context of your school, not with other schools. They see if you have taken advantage of the opportunities provided by your school.
