I’m a rising senior at the Webb School of Bell Buckle, a tiny school in Middle Tennessee.

adjectives that describe my current school setting: miniscule, private, boarding, rigorous, “college prep”

I really want to go to a college in a semi-rural to suburban setting, but I definitely want stuff to do on weekends. I’ve lived in about six different dorms in the past four years, so I’m getting sick of the normal, beige-colored dorm that looks kind of like an institution. Comfort and safety are my main concerns when it comes to boarding.
I like doing stuff outdoors, and I’m not really into parties. I love going out to eat, going to plays/movies, and other laid-back things.

my intended area of study: English, Literature

Would I fit in at Yale?

Also, I’ve heard that New Haven can get pretty sketchy. How accurate is this statement?

You would fit in at Yale.

The campus is safe. At any college, you will always have some safety issues and although New Haven has a bad reputation, the city is actually much nicer and safer than it used to be. Safety is not a concern for Yale students (as long as you don’t wonder the streets at 3 AM all alone - even then your probably safe).

Yale is DEFINITELY in an urban setting. If rural/suburan is a must, then Yale will not be for you. New Haven can get kind of sketchy, but so can any other relatively small city.

English Lit is fantastic at Yale. However, you aren’t really going to find “semi-rural to suburban setting” with much “stuff to do on weekends.” I.e. you can’t have a lot of stuff to do on weekends and be in the middle of nowhere unless the “stuff to do” is hiking and similar activities.

However, I would deemphasize WishyWashy’s post. I really don’t like intense urban environments (Columbia/NYU scared the **** out of me) and to me Yale doesn’t feel urban. Why? Well, a couple main things… 1) Yale is a well-contained campus (i.e. city doesn’t spillover into campus) with many courtyards and its own spacious areas. 2) New Haven is a very small city as far as cities go.

I encourage you to check out the campus on your own and see if you could handle it. FYI, Yale has gone to great means to make the campus quite safe and it definitely is very comfortable!

Probably apply and get in before visiting because – not to be snotty – but most of the ppl on the tours don’t get in anyway and it costs some money to visit the East Coast from Tennessee.
