Smeal vs Kelley vs Tepper

Please help to decide between Penn State Smeal with Schreyers or IU Kelly with honors or CMU Tepper.

Smeal is not direct admit, so that’s one difference…there is risk you might not be able to study your desired major. Here are the major requirements for this year (could change for next year): https://ugstudents.smeal.psu.edu/academics-advising/get-into-a-smeal-major/smeal-college-entrance-to-major-2023-24

Have you looked at the majors you are interested in, the core courses, and major requirements for all 3 schools? Honors is a nice benefit at Kelley.

Are the net costs the same and/or are there any price constraints?

Mainly interested in Finance major with some minor. Net cost wise Tepper is almost 2.5 times more and that is where trying to figure out how much worth it is spending 85-90k vs 35-40k

Are all three affordable?

Carnegie Mellon is a totally different environment than the other two. Which environment do you want? Your college experience will be very different at IU/Penn State than it will be at Carnegie Mellon. The kind of location, size of school, size of business program, demographics of the student body, and almost everything else will be different. I would consider which kind of experience you would prefer.

Congratulations on Schreyers. It is one of the most exhaustive honors applications in the country. Very impressive!

What are your current post-grad aspirations?

Only you and your parents can decide that. If any require more than the $27K federal direct student loans, that would be something to consider (additional loans would be on the parents.)

For finance at Smeal, you will need a 3.5 in the ETM requirements to declare a finance major. Obviously you are a strong student with Schreyers and IU honors, but that requirement is something to consider. For example, knowing you need a fairly high GPA to get your desired major, would that stop you from pledging a frat/sorority or doing other things you might like to do?

Have you visited these schools?
