Smell of wet dog....(sorry)

D1 has moved temporarily and left much of her things here. There were some throws that you keep on a couch and I washed them because they smelled of wet dog - and they still smell of wet dog!

Before I try again, are there any good tricks to use? Soak in a vinegar solution? Dump in a whole bottle of Febreeze? I don’t want to ruin the fringe by over agitating.

I used Kirkland detergent pods (that she also left behind, lol). Her dog is young, and not smelly, but I guess he sits on those blankets a lot!

Try both cold air and sunshine. Hang them out on a sunny day.

If it’s not cold, try putting them in a freezer.

With the washer, add vinegar during the rinse cycle

Throw a generous handful of Oxyclean in the wash.

Spray Odoban on them.

There is a product called I think Odoban, , which is an Eucalyptus oil extract spray, and it does remove odors - even gasoline - I don’t know if it is still on the market, but we got it at Home Depot.

If you spray / almost soak a blanket with this, and then let it dry outside or in a garage, it will smell like strong dried flowers - which I find headache inducing, even worse than wet dog. But then run it through a regular wash with Tide and the eucalyptus smell and all odors will be gone.

Good luck.

Zep Air and Fabric Odor Eliminator worked very well for me to eliminate a wet car carpet odor. Immediate. results. It is available at Wal-Mart.

Sunshine!

Odoban is sold at both HD and Amazon. We eliminated musty basement smell with its help.

Spraying Febreeze on the offending subject matter serves as a quick fix too.

In addition to the above suggestions, if your washing machine has a “sanitize” setting, give that a try.

In the future consider getting a cat.

@TomSrOfBoston not necessarily. During a renovation, our cat got locked out of where her litter box was located so she peed on the carpeted stairs. Despite ripping up the carpet, lots of liberal use of Nature’s Miracle, etc, on a hot day, we can still smell it 15 years later and that cat passed away 5 years ago. Have not had that problem with any of our dogs. I do get the wet dog smell on a rainy day, but that does not linger. You can really never get rid of cat urine smell! I’m too afraid to even get another cat b/c I worry that even though we can’t smell the lingering scent on a regular day, the cat might.

LOL. Cats can create their own stinky messes.

Or read Alexandra Horowitz’s book Being A Dog and learn how much you should value and appreciate the smell of wet dog!

I’m allergic to cats! I’m not so allergic to dogs but I’m very bothered by D1’s doggie, and he’s soooooo cute. Oh well!

I’m stuck at home now so will try the sunshine trick and go looking for products later.

Re: odoban & musty basement smells

You sprayed it? Washed the floors? Do tell.

Sprayed generously on the office-grade carpeting that the prior owner put in there to kill odor-causing things. Then aired and ran fans for a couple of hours a day and repeated this cycle a couple more times until the musty smell was gone.

I put ammonia in the washer with smelly things and it works great. Also works great on really dirty, muddy, or greasy clothes.

Stick it in a sealed bag with a bunch of baking soda for a few days, then shake out the baking soda and wash it again?

I used Natures Miracle “just for cats” on some covers that had cat urine smell, then washed it, and it worked great. The product I used was specifically for cats, but they have other options.
