Smelly towel - any solution?

My daughter’s kitty had a fairly rare skin mite and she had to bathe her in this smelly sulfur based stuff several times over a 4 week period to get rid of the mites. The good towel she used to cuddle and dry kitty after the baths has an unpleasant residual sulfur (like rotten eggs) smell even after several washes, so she left it here last time she was home. I have tried adding vinegar to the wash and rinse which reduced the odor but did not completely get rid of it. Have it laid out in the sun to see if that will help. Any suggestions? I hate to see a good towel trashed.

I don’t know if it would work on sulfur, but I love Bac-out, it takes out even kitty pee!

I’ve had good results from adding 1/2 cup to 1 cup of Borax to the wash, along with Tide HE detergent, then following with a vinegar rinse and finally a plain rinse. Borax has saved a lot of our towels and underwear.

Oh I might try the Borax - I think I can find that here. The Bac-out sounds good but I think the cost of buying it and shipping it would be more than the towel is worth!! Doubt I can find it locally (middle of nowhere, Oklahoma).

I should go check if the sun has helped.

Bleach is your best firend when it comes to thiols and other sulfur compounds. Chemists soak their smelly thiol-contaminated glassware in bleach - works all the time. Bleach oxidizes the smelly compounds into water-soluble, non-smelly ones, and they wash off. Unfortunately, bleach might ruin the colors on the towel. I’m not sure if OxyClean will do the trick, but it doesn’t hurt to try. If you don’t have it, get some and share with your D - my new kitten peed on the couch (ouch!), but a solution of this miracle product took care of the smell. My boss said OxyClean saved his carpets when his D’s dog, ahem, carpet-bombed the house.

Funnily enough reading the Borax suggestion reminded me that I have OxyClean in the cupboard and the towel is right now in the machine with the Oxy. The towel is bright orange so I don’t think I’ll risk the bleach.

Whatever happens with the odor this towel is going to be the cleanest towel on the planet!!

I also find drying towels in the sun instead of the dryer helps get rid of odors, though I haven’t had to get rid of this type of odor, just the usual too long in the gym bag stuff.

I use OxyClean faithfully and it gets out smelly athletic boy sweat.
If you still have a smell, wash with baking soda, about 1/2 box. I would rinse twice, with Ultra Downy with Frebreze.

I think I would accept over30’s advice with this proviso…sprinkle the dry baking soda over the damp towel and leave it for half an hour before washing it.

Kitty is okay, yes?

Kitty is fine now. The mite is so rare that they had to send the skin scrapings off to a lab and even then it took them a while to figure out what they were. No idea where she got them. Her siblings and the other cats did not have them. She actually seemed quite healthy but had bloody poos (sorry) and when they sent them off to get them checked they found the mites there then checked her skin - not sure if they caused that problem or it was a coincidence. I think I read at the time that maybe having some immune system problems might make a cat vulnerable to the mites - it’s been a while. This was last year when she was still a little kitty but I didn’t know about the towel till recently. She also had some sort of herpes virus of the eyes so has to take some powdered medicine with her food. Other than that she seems very healthy.

My daughter learned the cost of having a pet pretty quick!!

I love Bunsen’s advice
I have a kitty with " issues" with dominance and likes to pee on the towels I leave in the laundry room…I wash them in really hot water with oxi-clean and Tide. It seems to work , though his problems go unresolved…he is the favorite with the house , so I can’t put him down

Let the towel, pet bedding, etc, dry in the sun-it’s a great, natural deodorizer!
