SMG = "Boot Camp"

In the information BU sent to me, it said that SMG serves almost as a bootcamp, being one the “hardest” undergraduate business programs in the country…does anyone have anything to comment on this…im very interested…and quite intrigued…thanks

I would say boot camp is a fair characterization.

Ryanbis could you or anyone else whose been in SMG ellaborate on why/how it is so tough?..cuz one thing that would **** me off if i went to a business school would that i wouldnt be challenged…obviously this would not be a problem at BU…which really makes me want to attend even more… but yeah if ryanbis/ or someone else could explain a little more…thatd be greatly appreciated

I certailny don’t think you have to worry about being challenged.

Why do people think of SMG as boot camp?

Some of the things I remember doing:

Freshman year:
-8 hour team meetings
-Weekly 10 minute team presentations
-Regular team projects
-8 am lectures+4 hours of discussion+2 hours of lab
-Standing outside three different Amerian Eagles for two hours on a Friday night to collect survey data

Sophomore year:
-24 hour team meetings
-100 page paper
-OB Consulting interviews

Junior year:
-Class 8-12 five days a week
-Exams from 6-10pm two days in a row
-Up to 3 presentations a week, ranging from 10 minutes to 45 minutes
-7 day-long team meetings (and I’m not kidding or exaggerating)
-Calling up Taiwan trying to get price quotes on some material you need for your Core product
-Trying to do market reserach on the hockey market (getting data from kids and coaches is not fun…and we needed to conduct four focus groups, collect 100 surveys and interview as many relevant people as you can).

Senior year:

Not that bad, actually…except you probably won’t be ready to leave, yet (I’m not).

I’m sure I’m missing a few things, but that’s what comes to mind.

wow thanks ryanbis…that sounds more than intense…wow…would you do it again…if you had the choice??

I’m glad I went through it.

That’s intense but it sounds fun…ok, yeah, I sound like a dork for saying that…but I’m looking forward to it.

lol HELL yeah bf06bu…ME TOO

100 page paper OMG!!!

i was at St. Louis University admitted student day…and the lady was talkin about other colleges in comparison to SLU. my mom brought up BU because i was acccepted there…and she even said that boston is KNOWN for their business school…she says it is very difficult…but the sucess rate is high…and this coming from somebody who works for another school.

“100 page paper OMG!!!”

It’s not that bad. Keep in mind that this is all done with a team (which can be a challenge of its own).

i’m having second thoughts.

Why is that?

thanks for all your threads/posts on the SMG. After reading all your comments, I’ve decided to attend BU because the SMG sounds like both good/hard education and lots of fun at the same time. I’m really looking forward to starting college.

and people shouldn’t freak out with the strenuous agenda/curriculum. almost all of it seems to be group-based, and i think i’m really gonna like the emphasis on teamwork and social skills.

oops i forgot to put RYANBIS

thank you, ryanbis

Not to mention BU’s brand new SMG building is incredible especilally the little group work/snack cubbies. The lobby is awesome.
Hope you al do wel there. It does sound like a strenuous program but if its also fun and exciting than it is worth it.

You are welcome.

Why isn’t BU’s business school rated higher by US News - only 40?

I went to the Open House at SMG today and had an official tour of the SMG building, and I have to say that it is absolutely gorgeous. It’s much prettier in person.

really…that sounds very encouraging…im going in two weeks…so we’ll see
