Hello! I am in a big dilemma. I have always wanted to go to U of M, however I’m starting to question whether or not I would be a good fit. For one thing, I feel like everyone at the school is a genius, and I am definitely not. I got a 30 ACT and a 3.84 GPA. I got accepted to LSA, but did not get preadmit to Ross. I did however get direct admission to the Cox School of Business at SMU, also a very respectable school. At SMU, I feel like I would not feel that everyone is smarter than me, whereas I feel like if I went to Michigan I wouldn’t be able to get as high of GPA, and may not be able to get into Ross. Where should I go? Money is not an issue by the way.

Don’t worry you won’t feel like everyone is smarter than you if you’re in LSA, unless you plan on being a Math, Physics major.

Thank you for the response! But what about the communications major at Michigan? Is that well respected? I’m interested in some type of media related business.

Thought you just did this scenario with Miami - what happened to that? Now its SMU?

Yeah - you seem very insecure. Multiple people already said you wouldn’t be accepted if you weren’t qualified.

A 30 ACT and 3.84 are by no means below average or even average, and Michigan is an amazing school with a lot of opportunities. If you keep good work habits and apply yourself you’ll do fine. How everyone else performs is irrelevant to you and your success.

Overall, I’d just go with where you feel like you’d fit in the best and have the best opportunities. If you like Michigan and see yourself succeeding there independently of everyone else, then go!

I want to make the best decision, and just found out about cox school of business.

OK, I would suggest you challenge yourself at Umich. If you are determined and work hard, you can maintain a 3.5+ GPA and gain Ross Admission. There is no comparison between Ross and Cox. Even if you don’t get into Ross, your career, post-grad outlook is better with a Umich degree.

You have more confidence in yourself. Pretend for a moment that you will be successful and then decide where you want to go. Michigan is a much more prestegious option than either Miami or SMU.

I can’t make your decision for you but I don’t want you to make it based on feeling inferior to your classmates. Sure, some will be in the “brilliant” category but most simply will be very smart hardworkers… just like you are!

Could you give Michigan a try for one year? If it turns out that you’re the dumbest one there (I kid! I’m sure you’re not! Even if you were, you still got admitted!), you could transfer somewhere else.

Best wishes for you, hon. :)

I received a Masters degree from SMU in the 80s and D is currently a student at UM. I can tell you that even as a parent, I can tell you that there is no comparison in the school atmosphere between SMU and UM. I would strongly encourage you to go to Michigan.

BTW, to repeat a post I just made in another thread: even if you don’t get into Ross, Ross is now offering a business minor to students in LSA. So, even if you don’t get into Ross, you could at least get a minor in business.

^^Please take note that the Ross Minor is through an application process which is actually more selective than the BBA.

Some of my Ross friends were actually worried that that minor would devalue their degrees lol.

i absolutely love the SMU area. It’s situated in the one of the most affluent area of dallas, if not the country (university park/highland park). The amenities (read food options in terms of both grocery and restaurant) are ridiculous.

^^^^^I’m sure an entering 18 year old would be prioritizing the restaurant and supermarket scene in the sourrounding neighborhood of a school.

^that was just a sidenote.

Everyone has different priorities and needs rjk. If the OP just wants to go to law school, then Michigan’s greater academic reputation is irrelevant to him/her.

^^I’m pretty certain that info was germane to the formerly-18-year-old-bear-cats at one time, though, so fair enough ;)

^^^No doubt! My guess is that the area has the exact type of foie gras that he prefers. LOL

^^ no kidding… there’s a central market where I see a lot of SMU kids frequent and they definitely have all types of foie gras products.
