@“Iron Maiden” Unless you NEVER complain about anything or vent about anything, what is your point? This is a thread to complain about snow. Maybe you never complain about anything because somewhere on the planet someone is worse off than you. What bothers me is not being cold because we have no heat, it is the wastefulness of losing food. And I feel for the elderly who struggle with the snow clearance and cold. There are always people who die in these storms, even the last wind storm. With 18 inches of snow, you know that there will be heart attacks. But yes, Puerto Rico is without power and I for one am happy as a taxpayer to pay for the best possible solution for them.
Lots of fine gritty snow falling diagonally. Our metal roof is starting to shed, so we have intermittent rumbles outside. Our previous dog was terrified of the sound, so last year I made a spectacle of myself standing outside with our new puppy, squealing with delight and plying her with liver treats every time a clump of snow fell and made a noise. She’s content on the couch now. Maybe soothed and confident, maybe just relieved I’m not acting ridiculous.
@doschicos I saw that; wonder what’ll happen to the turnout.
We’re in school, though about a third of each of my classes are absent. The forecast is still 3-6
As best as I can tell, we have 2-3" in central CT so far, but the wind is picking up. Earlier I saw that heavier bands of snow were east and west of here, so if one of those bands move over us then our snow total will increase rapidly.
No power again. I had almost finished cooking dinner super early.
My avatar doesn’t want to come inside out of the blizzard!
Voting? Lol, my area is Shut Down. I heard that distinct pop a transformer makes when it busts and wonder if my neighbors are down.
One neighbor on my street snowblowed his 40+ foot driveway. He’s always off on his timing. Next to him, the guy from the northern reaches of Maine hasn’t budged. He knows it’s futile, at this point.
@gearmom , so sorry. I know it’s a drag. Have you considered getting a generator?
@Consolation We have a generator which sounds like an airplane. It only makes enough power to run the refrigerators. We’ll run it several hours a day to try and not lose food. We really can’t make it to 5 days without power without losing food. Three days is O’k. I am using data on my phone because I am irritated. Though last wind storm we had many ice cream sodas which the kids liked because what else can you do with mushy ice cream. We were able to keep our frozen meat O’k. I had just spent $200 on a meat stock to make life easier because I had been sick. Thankfully that did not go to waste.
It’s COLD outside…can’t you move some of that food outside?
We have a small generator also…can power a few outlets, the fridge, and some overhead lights. We switch it around to use a small space heater if needed.
But the food…we move some of it out in the snow!
@thumper1 We could with this storm but the last wind storm we were in the forties for temp. I was totally not prepared for 4 1/2 days of no power. I’m usually ready.
Woohoo…snow has stopped!! Well…for week anyway. We really can’t tell how much snow we got because it was windy. But it has stopped.
I feel for my Maine family and friends in coastal MA, and on Cape Cod. They are getting hammered!

Actually, there are different theories to snow removal. Especially with over a foot of heavy, wet snow, trying to do it all at once is difficult, so it makes sense to do it in more than one stage. If is dry snow, you can wait until after it stops snowing.
H always snowblows several times during a storms.
Pretty much stopped here, too, except what the wind blows. Apparently, the storm was picky here, dumping wetter/heavier on some areas, lighter on others. Or somehow, a layer of ice under the top stuff. We got the light, “just push the shovel through it” snow.
@doschicos Agree about early snow moving, we laugh that we usually meet up in the wee hours, during an overnight storm. But this one was powder, in my neighborhood. And I measured- maybe 8", plus what blows in the next hours. I cleaned off my car and it’s got another 2".
Still snowing like crazy here in MA.
Lots of snow in my area of MA–this is the third nor’easter this month. There are lots of tree branches down in my yard–went out to try and see if I could shake some snow off the branches of my favorite trees so they wouldn’t break off. Not sure it helped. When we built out house 17 years ago, we opted for a heated driveway and front walk–best decision we ever made. We still have to clear the top of the driveway and the front steps, which can be a task when you get more than a foot of snow–the amount we have now (and it’s still coming down).
Officially a blizzard in Portland - our second one this winter. That’s pretty rare! “Officially, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow OR blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours).”
Driveway all cleared here!
If we have 10 or so inches of snow…and it’s still snowing gangbusters…DH will clear the driveway before the snow ends. Otherwise…it’s a huge task to remove 18-20 inches of snow…and we have a HUGE snowblower.
