<p>I just checked the weather and there is a severe Weather Warning out for a snow storm for the upstate NY beginning tonight and continuing through tomorrow afternoon. Son was going to drive home tomorrow but may now need to rethink that idea and head home Saturday. Anyone else hear anything new about the possible snow storm?</p>
<p>I happened to be talking to a friend who lives in the Albany area and she said that they’re strongly discouraging travel in that area. Extremely icy conditions, heavy winds and a combination of heavy snow and ice are predicted until tomorrow afternoon. I don’t know where your son is or where he’s headed, but Saturday sounds like a much safer bet.</p>

I recall decades ago when I drove myself home (on 2 lane roads) after finals. I had slept minimally over a several day period. It was only when I observed a giant striding across the road in front of me that I realized with a start that I had been dozing.</p>
<p>It is NOT very nice tonight in the Albany area. D is coming home tomorrow from Buffalo – by train. Might that be an option for your son, nysmile? A long haul, I know, but Amtrak from Plattsburgh to Penn Station and then the LIRR??</p>
<p>I’m going to “strongly encourage” him to consider staying up there and leave on Saturday. Husband suggests that I tell son about the weather warning and hope that he uses common sense and makes the right decision on his own. Husband has to remind me often that Son is old enough to make his own decisions and that it’s time to back off and let him figure things out on his own. I suppose he’s right but I will still strongly encourage (LOL) via “instant message” that he consider waiting until the chance of bad weather has passed. His college is very good about letting kids stay in the dorms if needed (they sometimes charge $10/night).</p>

<p>Looking at the outage reports here, Plattsburgh is fine, but thousands in the Albany area are out, so if you are traveling in that area be ultra-careful, and of course watch for any downed lines!</p>
<p>I’m in Albany and it’s been a mess since yesterday, power still out for many, lots of downed lines. The sky finally lightened an hour ago and I think it’s warming up now, so hopefully the ice problem is receding.</p>

<p>We were in MA for a few days and my wife called to tell me that we were without power in NH. We drove back and things were a lot worse in NH - much more in the way of ice on trees. There weren’t a lot of cars on the road and many things looked closed. We went through two intersections without traffic signals working. There was a bad accident at one of the intersections with fire, paramedics and police working.</p>
<p>Our home had power when we arrived.</p>
<p>Work has had power on and off and I think that most left as we can just work at home. I probably would have just brought everyone back to MA if it looked like we weren’t going to get power in NH. It’s going to be pretty cold tonight.</p>
<p>We saw one scene that looked odd - a huge gas line going out on the highway. Apparently there were people with gas-fired generators lining up to get gasoline for short-term power.</p>
<p>Son decided to stay up at school one more day and head home tomorrow(Sat). The college emailed the students and warned them of the icy roads around Albany. Housing also emailed the on-campus students and informed them that they could stay on-campus if they chose to delay their traveling.</p>
<p>I hope all your children get home safely in the next few days. I can only imagine how worried I would be in the same situation.</p>

Please tell him to be very careful traveling. The roads may not be icy any longer but tree branches and whole trees are falling and probably will continue to call given the continued cold.</p>
<p>My parent’s house in NH is on a major E-W highway and they are saying no power for three days. Those out in the woods will be out for a long time.</p>
<p>His college is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours north of Albany but realizing that many students would have to drive through Albany on their way home for the Winter Break, the college warned them that the Albany area was very icy and suggested that they modify their traveling plans. Housing said that they could stay in the dorms until the roads cleared up a bit. SUNY Plattsburgh did not lose power.</p>
<p>He’s leaving this morning from Plattsburgh. S2 has finals this coming week and will not come home until next weekend–his college didn’t get hit very hard with the storm (Marist).</p>
<p>He’s home! Walked in the door as we were eating dinner. He wolfed down a roasted chicken dinner and went upstairs to nap.</p>
<p>I’m glad he decided to wait. I once tried to “beat” a storm coming home for Christmas break. I made it home ok, but the drive took me about two times longer than it should have, not to mention the countless vehicles I saw off the road!</p>
<p>Me too. I really wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He does have enough stubborness in him to think that he could make the drive through the storm. I think what changed his mind was not my suggestion to wait but the college’s email to the student’s recommending that they rethink their travel plans. </p>
<p>One home and one more to get home. H is picking S2 up on Friday so he can teach him the drive home (a mere 3 1/2 hr. drive as opposed to the 7-8 hr. drive of S1).</p>
<p>I hope all those people who lost electricity get it back real soon.</p>
