Snowball's chance in H***?

Hi everyone. I’m a sophomore at a slightly-competitive Catholic high school. I would positively love to go to Columbia. I feel it would be the perfect foundation for, basically, the rest of my life. I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up or anything. But hey, shoot for the moon, you land among the stars, right??

I don’t have too many stats yet, but I would really appriciate some advice for what to do in the future. Oh and by the way, my school has a trimester system. Two tris=complete subject education for that year. Electives are one tri

Freshman year

Culmilitive gpa W 3.9, I think… unsure of unweighted.

Theatre all year, NHS induction, Thespian membership, was one of 8 out of about 550 selected to go to Washingon D.C. to speak with senators/congresspeople about preservation/conservation (somewhat of an honor)

Future Plans: I plan on working my butt off and earning a scholarship at Thespian convention junior yr (LARGE convention), AP gov jr yr, AP Bio, English, History sr yr. Oh and I know my ecs are horrible but I plan on distinguishing myself in theatre and literature/writing…i have a few ideas.

I know some of the classes up there are not impressive (computer apps, health) but there is ZERO way of getting out of them.

BOTTOM LINE…Snowball’s chance in h*** for Columbia??

Other colleges I’m thinking about include Swarthmore, Boston College, Boston University, Williams, Colgate, Hamilton.

Thank you so much! Any constructive criticism appreciated!

anyone…?

Your GPA seems a little low, so at this point you should focus on significantly boosting it during your junior/senior years to improve your class rank as much as possible. Another really important factor is the SAT, which I’m guessing you haven’t taken yet - come back again once you have a score, and we’ll be able to say for sure whether you have a realistic shot or not.

Work on getting significant leadership positions and unique/impressive ECs. It could happen.

thanks guys! that was definetly reassuring after seeing some other people on here! Yeah I plan to take the sat this summer just to see where I’m at.

i love your quote… “Reach for the moon, you’ll land somewhere on the stars” I love that. I always say like if you reach high than you’ll land either high or medium but the way you put is so much better. This is my quote to live by right now :)

OHH right for your chance… Ecs have to beyound amazing at this point. Volunteer alot, get an internship or a summer program. Like summer of 2012 I wanna go to Collumbia pre-college program and actually take classes there and get credit… So try that but its expensive so find some way to pay for it (I’m getting a scholarship frommy school) fundraise or search online. Try community college classes, that would be great too. Also if you have a talent like painting, writing, music then try to enter some contest and win something. Try to win essay contest. That will definetly help.

Again LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the quote  you just made my day (even though its already night time and the day is over lol) even better though you just made my life :)

oh so you’re doing a summer program? I think I checked out the courses online and saw they had a creative writing program which I really really really would love to go to!!! Unfortunetly it’s super expensive. How are you getting a schlorship from your school? I had never heard of that before. Oh and thanks for liking my quote so much lol.

On the summer program thing: I went to the Columbia Summer Program last year and I absolutely loved it. Incredibly expensive, yes, but absolutely amazing. Totally sealed the deal for me. I’m convinced that’s one of the main reasons I got in. I know a few people from the program that I met who I saw at the Days on Campus for Columbia, aka they got in, too. It really ups your chances. Schools like to know you’re genuinely interested in them, not just their name.

I didn’t do the summer program yet, Im doing it next summer 2012. Anyway my school has this scholarship for juniors who want to go to do a summer program. Idk why they do this they jut do. Anyway you can go to fastweb or scholarship.com and enter some scholarships there.

Isablewhatz- good to hear, that’s what I’m hoping will happened for me. :)

wow. now im going to look into that more carefully. maybe i can afford it if i do some additional research. in the meanwhile ill improve my gpa and arrange practice sat testing. also i ran for a student government position today so hopefully that works out…I just want to go to Columbia so bad!!! don’t we all

yes we all want to go sooo badly… OMG thinking about it makes me go crazyyyy in a good way. makes me want to work super hard :)
