Here’s a review from David Pogue at the NYT that I just found during a bout of insomnia! I’m hoping for a Mother’s Day gift!
<a href=“New iPad Appeals More to Emotion Than Reason — State of the Art - The New York Times”>New iPad Appeals More to Emotion Than Reason — State of the Art - The New York Times;

^Good article. Very pro ipad2. I think this sentence says it all:

Nothing wrong with that…if it makes people happy, then it’s served its purpose. I’m just hoping I going to love it so much more than my net book that I can justify the expense of owning both. :)

My husband loves his Ipad …it’s ok but I don’t want one. He wants the new one and will most likely get it ( and sell the one he has to a friend )

do you guys think it’d be worth getting it to take notes in class and type up papers?

I do not think that it is very good for taking notes. I have tried the virtual keyboard and a Bluetooth keyboard. I am typing this on an iPad and I would not want to do it for a long time.

The camera, at least the reports of it that I’ve seen, is an issue for me. I don’t think that anyone has anything definitive yet but it appears to be around 0.9 MP to 1.3 MP. They could certainly do more pretty easily and they could do better quality optics but it might require more space for the optics. We will see how useful it is when these ship and when we get more hands-on and lab test reviews.

Apple has a much better camera in their iPhone and I think that critics would have been happy with that.

On the processor being cheap: I’m not sure where you got this. The iPad1 had a very good processor for when it was released (last April). Dual-core ARM processors for mobile devices have only been out for a year or less and the iPad2 has a Dual-core processor which almost doubles processor performance.

These processors don’t really compare to desktop processors which typically cost much more than mobile processors but they don’t have to do all of the stuff that desktop processors have to.

Typing on the iPad is definitely much more usable than say on an iPhone. I type with only a small reduction in speed, but I think for an extended time of typing - say 10 minutes or more than a couple paragraphs per sitting, it will get tedious. For taking notes during class - you’re probably better just spending $300 on a cheap netbook. It would serve the purpose better - cheaper, smaller, and maybe even lighter than an iPad, and with a physical keyboard. The iPad is good for writing up posts on a blog, sending email, etc; but while you can get iWork Pages for I think $5 instead of just using the textpad, I wouldn’t think it’s the best bet for writing essays, etc.

BCEagle,

I’ve learned to ignore the specsturbators. They only care about specs for specs sake. It’s a never ending game for who can own the device that has the most gigaflertz, regardless of what you can do with those gigaflertz.

Honestly, I’d rather have 10 hours of battery life than a marginally faster CPU in a tablet.

Does anyone own an Ipad with 3G option? I am wondering if the speed is acceptable and whether 2G data plan is sufficient for email checking and light surfing.

ccreader- my law partner has the 2G data plan and the 3G option and said both are fine. He’s a little bit careful with his data use (make sure to get on wifi whenever available etc) and I wouldn’t consider him the heaviest user there is.

I agree with MoWC.

I have 3G for work, and the speed is fine for mostly everything. 2G can be a bit sluggish, but you could get by in theory.

Sat in a long meeting yesterday and got gadget envy
A number of people were taking notes on the iPad instead of paper. It is frowned on to have a notebook screen flipped open. It looks like a barrier. The iPad is low even with a slanting support and is not such a visual barrier. I was reading that for the data plans you do not necessarily have to subscribe to them all of the time if you are normally on wifi. You can activate when needed. Anyone with experience with Verizon?

I may be able to hold out till three- but that is just maybe.
I am getting an iphone first- but have to wait till end of April for my plan.
I currently have an ipod touch & have never used anything but the Mac OS at home.
I have Verizon & a mifi- but you can also use the iphone for access apparently.
I expect I will just get the wifi ipad if I get the 2nd version.
I like the case & like that it is thinner, I had thought the first version was too heavy for my arthritic hands.
:p

is it worth getting the keyboard for it?

I used the KB from our iMac with the iPad but it was a hassle bringing it out and making sure that the batteries were good. I use the Bluetooth KB with my MacBook Pro when I am going to be doing development now.

If you are going to be doing a lot of typing, then I’d suggest a netbook or a notebook.

oh I do have a wireless keyboard- it is full size though- I hardly ever use it- in fact I forgot about it.
:o

The Apple Bluetooth keyboard is pretty small. It fits into my laptop backpack pretty easily.

So anybody with their iPads or their iPad release day purchasing stories?

Unboxing videos have started to roll onto YouTube.

I’m wondering if I go to Apple store tomorrow morning, if there will still be a crowded rush? Or if I go to my local Target I wonder if they’ll have the model I want? Too bad Target doesn’t have much of an in-store inventory lookup feature on their website for the iPad 2.

Tried to order online - 3 weeks lead time. I think I will wait 3 weeks and just buy whatever I want at the store :)

I ordered online- 2-3 weeks, but I’ve waited this long so I’m OK with that. My funny story is that somehow the default address on my Apple account got switched to my friend’s address in Dallas (I sent him a gift card at Christmas). AFTER I did the whole order of the iPad and accessories, it let me know where it was going to be shipped and it was to BARRY!!! So- I couldn’t change it online (could change the default but not the order)so I had to call. I thought I would have a long wait, but it was only a couple of minutes. I explained to the nice girl that I really didn’t want to send my new iPad to my friend in Dallas. All good.
