so close yet so far: national recognition

(Okay, it’s specific, but I would appreciate some feedback)

I plan to submit a resume with my common app, and, well… in short:

I was 89th percentile the past 2 years in the National German Exam (where 90th percentile is the cutoff for the award) should I mention this, or leave it off? I ask because I won recognition freshman yr, and when I read that (pretending to myself that I am an adcom) all I can think is: why only freshman year?

Is your major language or German-related? Is German a particularly serious hobby of yours? Do you not have other significant awards or ECs to mention?

If the answer is yes to a couple of these, then I’d say yes, otherwise no.

89th percentile in the National German exam sounds impressive, so I suggest including it somewhere on your application. It certainly suggests that you’re very good at German, so that could only work in your favor even though you didn’t win an award.

okay, yeah… I have a section on my resume under german, so I figure that works.
another german related question also (although if people have more comments on the first, I am dying to hear) I have things I’ve won at regionals and then state, but since it goes: regionals -1st, and then in the state section - 3rd… should I put both? It seems so empty when all of my 1st places are gone…

(For your first question) I definitely think you should list your two 89th percentile tests. Your tests sound like the same situation I had in Band. I worked my butt off my Freshman year to make the All-State band (extremely hard to do in Texas). The next two years I didn’t work quite as hard and got alternate to state, but made it again my Senior year. I went ahead and listed the two “so close yet so far” years and honestly don’t think anyone went “Hm…why didn’t she make it all four years?” It just showed that it’s tough to earn a seat there.

(And the Second) I’m not really sure it’s necessary to put your 1st place awards at the Regional competition when you did so well at State (placing at State speaks for itself). If you qualified for several things, however, and placed at State in only one of your competitions you probably should list your Regional places instead of just saying “Qualified for State in…”

but only list the regionals that I did not make at state?

Exactly ^.

How does all that fit in the application? Do we have that much space?

They’re attaching another page.

And yes. With my Regional LD stuff I only made it to the Regional semi-finals round (one friggin debate away from state…kills me, but the girl that knocked me out won state so I can’t feel too bad), so I went ahead and put my District 1st places as well as qualifying for Regionals to show that I’m in a tough Region (for the past three years kids from my Region won state in CX and LD).
