I should probably be asking this in the Financial Aid forum, but there aren’t many people there, so I thought this would be the best place to ask :)

So I understand that in many colleges the institutional method of calculating financial aid takes into account the noncustodial parent’s income, but there are exceptions. My parents divorced when I was about 2/3 years old in an Asian country. My mom and I moved to America soon afterwards. He has no custody and doesn’t pay child support, however the two times I’ve visited him he paid for hotels/ some travel expenses. Would this be an exception situation?

when i was applying to college last year, I was in a very similar situation you’re in right now.
What I did was, I asked the college for a non-custodial parent waiver. You have to get it signed by a lawyer though. It was also quite a hassel

FAFSA only takes the custodial parent’s income into consideration. Some colleges use both, some only custodial. Definitely find out which you are dealing with, and the waiver is a great idea.

Yes you should post your question there as well, because there are some FA gurus who moniter that forum [ sybbie for one] who know everything there is to know about FA.
