“John Paulson’s Advantage Plus fund was down an absolutely brutal 47 percent through September.
He’s not the only one.
Institutional Investor runs over losses this year, including:
Mark Mobius’s Templeton Emerging Market Fund is down 23 percent through September
Lee Ainslie’s Maverick Fund is down 17 percent
Paul Ruddock’s Global Financials Fund is down 19 percent
Leon Cooperman’s Omega Fund is down 12 percent
Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square is down 16 percent”

Hedge Funds are Mutual Funds for the moneyed class. It’s not so much the management expertise that you hire but the fact the HF’s unlike MF’s are allowed to short and invest in instruments that MF’s are not allowed to. But most importantly they are allowed to leverage. Typically 3 to 1. Hence the big +/- ROI.

They can play all they want with leverage just like any retail investor can - but the bottom line is they are long the market and we’re going into a recession so they will lose more unless they hedge their bets going forward.
