I want a VERY honest answer. If you’re happy there, what is it about the school that makes you like it? If you’re miserable, tell why. I’m a senior at a high school less than ten minutes away from UCSD, and I’m strongly considering going there. My brother goes there, but he doesn’t really provide any detailed responses. Also, I’d be living at home, commuting a mere twenty minutes every morning. I’d love an opinion about whether that is a good idea or not. Thanks!

I hate the school.

I have liked it very much. I faced a pretty hard decision just like you. In the end I choose to go to UCSD. The only thing I hate is that I’m homut you homesick. But you won’t have that problem!

Not to hijack your topic, but how good looking are the girls at UCSD in general? (Would have been perhaps rude to start a whole topic about this, ha.)

well you’re asking a very general question so i’ll give a very general answer.

the girls, especially over at ERC, are great

When I first came here, I was very excited for the school year to begin and overlooked the school’s possible flaws. However as time passed I became disappointed with the culture here. UCSD was a school that didn’t inspire a lot of passion in life/culture/politics unless you counted academics (though this is an excellent reason to come here). Some faculty members also gave me a bad impression of the school within the first quarter. Instead I found my happiness in other ways not directly connected with the school, including friends, volunteer work at the hospital, and studying abroad.

Am I happy here? Yes. But I don’t give the school credit for my happiness.

I’m a transfer student with one summer and the beginnings of a quarter under my belt.

So far I like it.

I find the campus very aesthetically pleasing. I like the architectural variety, and though I’m not a fan of modern I think the newer buildings toe the line pretty nicely. I appreciate all of the trees and grass and such. Of course, this is probably something you’ve already had an opportunity to judge.

How to judge it academically depends on your program, of course, but I’m pretty pleased with the math department. I know there are better programs out there, but by far and away there’s more that are worse. This could probably be said of many UCSD programs. Additionally, the professors seem decent.

The women are not bad. What can I say? There are “hotter” schools–like SDSU–but you’ll pay for it in terms of the quality of your academic program, and they’ll probably be less approachable to boot.

The greatest thing about UCSD? The foam soap dispensers. I love those things!

That said, I have very little interest in social programs, humanities, or anything else not mentioned here.

Cheers,
Joe

Well, so far I like it, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to get owned by my courseload soon.

foam soap dispensers you say? wow my dream school

I’ve been here for a little over a week, and so far I like it. The professors and TAs seem intelligent and know how to teach the class, and every friend I’ve made here is dedicated and ambitious yet very easy to get along with - and I’ve made lots of new friends within just this first week.

How are the girls? Maybe not SDSU quality, but certainly MUCH better than I expected. When I first heard about Triton Eye I thought everyone here would be morbidly obese with acne all over, but really the quality of females here is about the same as my high school. I’ll admit I have extremely high standards and yet I’m satisfied, in fact I hardly understand how this school got the Triton Eye reputation in the first place. My guess is that it’s often compared to SDSU, which has some of the most attractive girls around.

You guys are making SDSU sound like some kinda heavenly place compared to UCSD, heh.

What’s the deal with the Triton Eye? Never heard of that before.

[Urban Dictionary: triton eye](Urban Dictionary: Triton Eye)

Enjoy…

HAHAHAHAhahaha. This triton eye phenomenon could be both good and bad lol.

Haha. I heard a couple of guys talking about it (fellow freshmen this year) and they were like “dude… that’s so not true.”

Didn’t really mean to give off that impression. Maybe in terms of the parties*, but certainly not in terms of prestige.

*And by the way, I now know from first-hand experience that UCSD does have a party scene, and a good one at that. Like you may have heard before, you just have to look for it.

Girls about what I would expect from an academic college.

But coming from Los Angeles, most places are gonna be a let down.

Roughly three days in, and I’m loving the weather and classroom atmosphere.

I am NOT loving the lack of diversity on campus. Seriously, as one of the few brown fella’s on campus it’s very easy to feel out of place. I guess I notice it far more because, again, I’m coming in from Los Angeles. One of the last great melting pots…

Who knows, it could be just me, but there’s something off-putting when you go into a UCSD bathroom stall, and see “F**K Mexicans” on the wall in front of you…

Okay. I’ve been here for a little over a week, and I’m in love. The workload is already pretty difficult and I know it’s going to keep getting harder. I love EVERYTHING else though. The stereotypes aren’t true! There have been probably 10 frat parties or more since I arrived, plus tons of welcome week events - the social life is great. Tons of students party, and we all seek each other out. But the good thing is that most everyone here also cares about academics. It’s a good balance to meet people like that.

I am a girl and I was really worried about triton eye, too. However, there are TONS of hot guys everywhere! I was shocked when I got here. For guys - there are cute girls here too mostly I have seen them in sororities.

In short, come to UCSD. I was a little hesitant about my decision but I love it here. The weather is fabulous and the atmosphere is just what I want - great academics but also parties when you want to have fun.

love the school.

but a lot has to do with the people that i have crossed paths with.

@anchor:

I’ll second that. Though I don’t think I am myself a minority at UCSD, I remember seeing some really vile stuff about Muslims written around campus. Made me feel a little sick. I don’t know if this was just a passing phenomenon, or perhaps uncommon at other institutions, or perhaps something worse.

Ha, its funny you should mention that. Right underneath that comment I read was something concerning muslim folk as well.

It’s really sad actually, considering I never found any of this stuff while I was attending a community college.

Who knows how many people actually feel that way at UCSD, but I’ve found through personal experience, that people will usually express themselves more openly if given anonymity and an audience.
