So how many got full rides?

Hi im from Indiana and it seems to me this year ALOT of people in my graduating class were bragging about being offered IU for free, but of course they would never accept. I thought this was weird that like everyone who applied just happened to get offered full ride and only 2 people actually showed me evidence whereas everyone else just sort of said, “oh yeah i totally got in for free”. I’m in the upper ranks of the top Indiana public school and did not receive full ride or much of a scholarship. Was I left out or is everyone else just trying to lie their way into ego-boosters?

All the kids at this school class of 2008 that got the Indiana University Excellence Scholarship you could say got a “free ride”, depending on how you define it (almost all tuition paid). These were $8,000 for probably the school with the most Excellence Scholarship students in the state. Add Hutton Honors scholarships and other types of scholarships and you start getting into funds that pay for room and board.

aznteiryakichef, if you are a urm (asn = asian?), try to get into the Hudson Holland Scholars Program for 5,000-9,000 in scholarship money a year.
http://www.indiana.edu/~hhsp/

,

I guess I would say they’re POSSIBLY defining “full ride” as full tuition only - since you’re saying there are so many. BUT…it’s true that IU has greatly increased their large scholarships in the past 5 years. So a lot of kids got many different scholarships, that combine to possibly = a full ride. Cost of attendance in state is about/under $20,000.

You can get $9000 instantly with GPA and SAT/ACT scores.
Then most of those kids will get Hutton (or Hudson Holland).
The some will get a few thousand more either from their college (CAS direct admit, for example), or National Merit or Valedictorian, etc.
Then there are plenty beyond that.

It used to be that about the only “full rides” were those few Wells Scholars. Now, once you “stack” the above with Cox Research or Presidential…that’s more than a full ride. For Cox, you must be in the top 5%, and for Presidential, they say they “give preference to National Merit” (though my daughter is National Merit and did not get it).

Last year, there were 87 MATRICULATED Presidential recipients. So I assume LOTS more were offered the scholarship since probably 1/2 of Indiana’s best students will use IU as their financial and academic safety, be offered the award, but not take it. But I also wonder if they’re cutting back…because that award has grown from about 40…to 87…in only about 4-5 years.

I will tell you that, when my daughter got her $9,000 (distinction/excellence) award…IU sent her a cute neck scarf. She wore it to school and DID say there were several of them at school. But…it’s a large school that sends tons of kids to IU.

I do think the scholarships at IU have increased, I’m doubting ALL those kids you know got full rides (if they don’t have top stats). My daughter did NOT get a full ride with 2210SAT, 34 ACT, 780/750SAT IIs and top 7% in large competitive class.

So don’t believe everything you hear.

Could they be 21st Century Scholars??? (they make up the difference of your cost to go)
