So I don't drink

I'm going to be a freshman next year at indiana university and from what I have heard so far there is a ton of drinking and drug use. I'm all for a good party, but not being an alcoholic or pot head am I going to fit in? or is the social life based around more questionable behavior?

I don't drink either, I don't go to that schools, but seriously if you don't drink, as long as you don't make it a big deal it isn't a big deal. I still go to parties and have fun and dance, I just don't drink.

If you don't want to drink you can just stay in the dorm or apartments and have a tea party.I think its better if you are not drunk to make fun of the drunk dudes. It seems like guys go crazy when they drink and girls just pass out. I didn't think chicks rilly drink much anyway. Or you could have an empty beer can and pretend you are drinking beer and then everyone would think you are drinking.

Adapting behaviours to appease others is disingenuous if not degrading to one's self.

Or he's mentally retarded.

...or both...

^^ Indeed. But (s)he actually does give really good advice sometimes. It almost seems to be a split personality.

Anyway, I go to MSU which is a huge drinking school. I don't drink. Most of my friends don't either. You'll find a clique to fit in with, no worries.

Only old people think its questionable.

I know quite a few people who didn't drink in high school and started to drink in college. They are hardly alcoholics. Point is, you may say you're not going to drink, but you may end up drinking. Don't be one of those people who won't go anywhere that has alcohol, or your social life may not be great. I think you need to adjust your attitude. Very few drinkers are alcoholics, and only a portion of people who smoke qualify as potheads. If you go into school being pretentious and judgmental of people who drink, you're going to limit yourself socially. Or you could go to a dry school if it's that big of a deal.

I don't drink either. I went to a big party school my first semester and it was never a big deal. I never really felt a need to explain myself. I don't mind if other people drink, and I don't think there's anything wrong with it - I just know myself and I don't want to start using drinking as a crutch and have a need to do it all the time. I feel better about myself and in control when I can go to a party and have a fun time without needing to get plastered. I might start drinking later on, just right now, I don't want to. It's perfectly fine. Don't worry about it! Even if you'll be a minority, you're still going to find people who feel the same way as you and if you choose to hang out with those people you won't constantly feel pressure to drink.

Every school with a huge drinking culture has circles of people who don't drink. You just have to find them. Also, IU's a biiiiig school. There will definitely be people who don't like to drink. Just find out the reputations of the dorms or the places where freshmen live and go for a more studious/quieter place.

I'm going to second what others have said...questionable? Really? It's so not a big deal if you choose to drink or smoke or whatever. It's also not a big deal if you choose not to.

Just a side note though, most parties are going to include alcohol. That's kind of a constant...you probably won't really find too many sober parties. If you're cool chilling with drunk people, then no problem.

As for weed, no one's going to force you to smoke, that ****'s expensive.

"As for weed, no one's going to force you to smoke, that ****'s expensive. "

No, it's not expensive. It's cheaper than alcohol. Even the "expensive" weed isn't really that expensive, because better weed is lighter, meaning you get more volume wise than, say, mids.

Im ignoring all the mean posts about me. And im just going to say im a guy.

You say now that you arent going to drink, but i bet when you are 21 you will change your mind, especially if all your friends are drinking. Its not really bad to drink if you are over 21 and if you dont drink alot. Like wine or beer with dinner is ok, but if you drink hard liquor at a party it can be bad.

You can defintley still go to parties and not drink. This shouldn't even be questioned. Not EVERYONE has to drink. And depending on how far away you live, you could always be the DD. Almost every group always has a friend who doesn't drink, or doesn't drink much.

It's cool if you don't drink... But if you're going to places/parties where your friend/peers are drinking, don't act all annoyed and boring; have fun. Recently me and my friend went out drink and another friends who didn't drink tagged along, it was cool, but the friend was being all secluded and quiet, we decided that the friend would never go out with us we we've been drinking because she was act different.

Just be cool in your own way.

too bad.. if everyone at a party is drunk and you aren't, people are gonna get ****ed
and since everyone at parties are always drunk, you better drink or stay out

I'm a freshman at Indiana University now, and the rumors you're hearing are true. People throw down REALLY hard and the drinking is unavoidable; at 3AM Friday/Saturday the entire campus is drunk and if you don't drink there's no escape. You can avoid the parties, but they come to you when everyone comes back to the dorms at 3-4AM drunk and @ and *@ in the hallways and then they puke everywhere, and atleast on my particular floor, then they drink more until alteast two people are passed out in the hallway and the entire floor reeks of vomit. I'm in a dorm called Foster, if that impacts your decision of where you want to live next year.

You can go to the parties sober, but you will be a minority and you won't be welcome there. They'll pressure you until you give in or leave. You'll have basically no chance of hooking up sober. I've done it a few times and basically you become everyone's b*tch and end up taking care of everyone.

As for finding people at IU who don't drink, it will be harder than you think. I've only met ONE kid so far who never drinks. Request a dorm in the Southeast neigborhood for your best chances.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. I was kind of in the same situation as you, although I do drink on occasion.

I dont drink, do drugs or even smoke, never harmed me socially. Infact it can help. Picture this ese:

Dorm party, drunk folk all over, ladies tipsy. Now you're sober, got your wits about you. Talk your way into those panties...

Yeah, you say you don't drink now. Just wait, I didn't drink either.
