So, I got rejected from a lower ivy early. Is applying to Yale a waste of time?

Of course Columbia is a low"er" ivy compared to Yale. I wouldn’t call it a “low” ivy though.

Well, I think it’s pretty impetuous of you to try and demean Columbia. It doesn’t have to be Yale to be a good school. I understand your point, though.

And OP, at the most selective colleges, plenty of good people get deferred/rejected, so that doesn’t mean that you don’t stand a chance - you are still a fine applicant. That being said, don’t let your anger at getting rejected from Columbia lead you to insult a still awesome school. That just isn’t fair for everyone that does appreciate the quality of a Columbia education.

No, believe me…I know Columbia is amazing. Lol, I don’t think you realized how hard I cried when I realized I’d never be able to go there. I’m not one of those people who’s all, “well I was too good for Columbia anyway!!”

haha…yeah. I still love Columbia, just trying to let go…

and to the others: yes, yes this is an example of how possible it is to be head-over-heels in love with a college. But I’m religious and I know everything happens for a reason…it’s just hard to figure out right now -_-

Anyway. I’ve been working pretty diligently on other applications and wanted to go on some visits, but it seems like most colleges are pretty much done visit-wise for the month. Is it worth it to go to a college (probably Yale, Brown, Cornell, or Tufts) with no info session or tour, just intending on looking around? I’d have a whole Saturday to waste.

I’m just assuming you were addressing me since my username was used on your post…

Columbia is an amazing school and honestly, way above my league as well (not that I applied, but I probably wouldn’t get in if I’d applied). Of course it doesn’t have to be Yale to a good school.

I’m just pointing out the common perception that Yale is more prestigious than Columbia. Most people agree that HYP are the clear top three in the ivy league (and often the hardest schools to get into). Sorry if I offended anyone but Columbia IS a low"er" ivy than Yale. Most would classify it as a mid-ivy.

^And someone could classify yale as a low"er" ivy than Harvard. The comparison would be ridiculous, but people could still say it.

still apply. i know someone who got rejected from middlebury but accepted to princeton (which doesn’t make sense when you think about it lol)

I know someone who got into middlebury but rejected from Yale…random stuff happens

I don’t think spamming the application button would be a good idea.

That’s not really random.

^agreed, middlebury is no yale

The Middlebury/Princeton thing gave me unbelievable hope, just so you know.

I just want to clarify that I wasn’t bashing Middlebury. Of course it’s great academically and is competitive to get into. I just meant many Middlebury acceptees could be rejected from yale.

I would take Middlebury over Yale any day of the week.

I actually know a girl that got rejected ED to Columbia and is now here at Yale. She revamped her app for the RD round and got in. Maybe take a look at your weaknesses and see if there’s any room for improvement?

I turned in nearly identical apps to Yale + Dartmouth. I’m at Yale now, but didn’t get into Dartmouth. There is definitely hope.

I think early apps are often sloppy and unpolished. Look through your app and see if you can tweak it to better showcase your talents.

Ah, yes. I’ve been going through my app, analyzing everything to a point where it’s probably not healthy. My essays, too, have undergone major revamping. I suppose anything can happen this round…

My friend got rejected from Yale and accepted into Harvard. Just go for it, you never know why you were rejected.

I’m sure this has probably been said like 100 times, but I dont feel like reading all 3 pages of this thread so

columbia IS NOT a lower EFFING ivy. K???

k good.
ok so its ranked 4th and Yale is ranked 3rd. big whoop U.S news. What makes you think its a lower ivy???

but aside from natalie sounding like a ******, I would say apply to Yale anyway, since ppl who have been rejected/deferred from Columbia sometimes do get in top dawgs like Harvard and Princeton

^ she’s trying to detach! taking a school that rejected her off of the pedestal that she built over the past four years is a healthy thing to do.
natalie, apply to yale! and harvard. and any other place you want to. youre truly qualified and you have a shot.

Chill, collegeftw. The term “lower Ivy” is usually used to mean non-HYP Ivies. HYP are consistently the three top schools on USNWR; the others fluctuate. Certainly, one could argue that the ranking system is flawed, but that is where the upper/lower division comes from.
