So my parents are that I got a 1950 SAT

hah thats as big of a thread hijack as one could hope for :P

At that time I had not taken the SAT or the subject tests (besides US History) yet, so I just put in estimates of what my score would be. So in that thread, I estimated my SAT score to be in the 2100’s so I put in 2120 and also estimated my SAT subject test scores. Apparently I was wrong though, but as for that chances thread I posted, that was just to see my chances at those colleges with those hypothetical test scores.

hah my dad just barged in my room and yelled at me for not saying hi to him when he came home…

i didn’t even hear him :P

I got a 2010 the first time I took my SATs, then a 1990, then a 2220 after studying for a week (would have had a 2260 but there were horrible math/writing curves). You can easily bring your score up to a 2200+.

My SAT score was EXACTLY a 1950. So I suppose that I’m a failure who’s not going to go anywhere in life, as well?

50 more points and you’ll be in the nice range of 2000+. That was my goal when I took the test.

1950 is in the top 10% of scorers. Your parents are obsessive and have the wrong priorities.

^agreed.

Also, by being a fan of Saint-Saens, the poster above me has the right priorities. (S)He just has to like Chopin a little bit more. :P

1950 is an awesome score! Your parents must be jaded, and it’s not right that they’re pitting you against another student.

The SATs are just another facet to an entire application, and your score isn’t even bad! Hell, I got an 1850 and my parents are really excited that I’m starting out with that for my first time. It’s all relative, and you should be proud that you got a solid, competitive score for many, many great schools!

A 1950 is like the 92 percentile…
It’s an excellent score, but different people have different standards. While schools like Yale and MIT are probably out of the question, many excellent universities, like Syracuse, RPI, or even Cornell would likely take you. Don’t feel ashamed!
I got a 1960 the first time I took it-I now have a 2220 superscore, so you could do 2200+ if you really wanted. Luckily, my Asian parents didn’t complain one bit about my 1960 lol but I did.
Good luck!

Where were your parents 17 or 18 years ago? If they started caring about your learning then, you could’ve got a much higher score.

Anyway, 2120 is within your reach as you estimated. With that score you could get into an Ivy. Take a SAT winter break for fun.

I got into Vanderbilt with that score…

Yeah, SATs are a way of comparing students from one school to another, because all schools are different with GPAS; it can be easy to get a 4.0 in one easy school, while getting a 3.6 may be like the A+ in a competitive college-prep school.

So, if a student could have a 4.0 gpa, top 5%, but have a low SAT score, while you are at the top of your school, the low SAT score can indicate to the adcoms that perhaps your school is easy and grades are inflated, and lead them to doubt your true academic competency…that you may not be as college-prepared as a student who attended a rigorous prep school.

But then again, I hear over and over again that high school transcripts are always more important to SAT scores; keeping to your school work is much more important than slacking off on school to study for a 3-hour test. I guess it’s just a matter of balance, how well you handle the two. If you’re very confident in your school grades, ECs and essays, I’d say it’s fine to leave as is. If you want to be on the safe side, however, you might want to raise it to at least a 2000, (you’re so closee!)

Don’t listen to the people saying that a 1950 is bad.

*** im aiming for an 1800! 1950 is so good! lol thats 95 percentile!

I dunno. Personally I look around the people in my class and I really don’t settle for anything lower than a 2300. 95 percentile, yes, but who are you comparing yourself to?..

You study and try hard. I’m sure you study for AP exams and SATs. I know plenty of people that just waltz in and do badly and don’t care. Does that 95th percentile still mean so much to you, is my question? Since you’ve put in effort?

I think that’s what your parents mean, because that’s what mine meant when they felt that a 2200 on my first try wasn’t that great.

Your parents are just being jerks. I mean, who berates their kid because of that? Why don’t they take it for you? Are they applying to college? lol

But then again, they probably expected more. Do yourself and them a favor and study hard for a retake. You can definitely get above a 2100.

The SAT is a terrible and illegitimate test with far too many purposeless deceptions. Anything 1800 or above can be considered a good score in my eyes. Heck, at my school, which is brought down by its student quality and average curriculum, 1950 is considered a great score. Now this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t attempt to score above 2100, but keep in mind what a stupid exam the SAT is.

1950 sucks
