I was looking at some posts, and found someone saying ‘a P earns 2.0 quality points when AMCAS recomputes your GPA.’ and some other people saying ‘they do not.’

Does dental/ medical schools really recomputes your P as C=2.0, so it brings your gpa down?
Anyone knowing about this for a fact?

Google “2011 amcas grade conversion guide” and download the PDF file that’s the top hit for answers to your question.

Dental schools don’t use AMCAS. They have their own system; you should consult that system’s publications for more information.

Good luck!

I don’t think P’s count as C’s…otherwise, all the students who have AP credits on their transcripts would have a bunch of P’s that would be counting as 2.0.

Mom2, AP credits are different because they’re counted in high school and as exam credit. I don’t think they contribute one way or the other to GPA. Check my link/google instructions though, my memorys probably a little foggy.

In the massive tome that kristin mentioned
…

1) P’s are not C’s (I don’t know where this idea came from , but it keeps popping up ). They do nothing to GPA.

2) and AP’s are not given credit unless your college gives it course credit **on the transcript ** and are not given a grade for that course unless your college gives it a grade on the transcript. BTW, I have never seen a college that grants AP credit and then puts the grade on the transcript.

Right, I’ve never seen a grade either…

But, on my kids’ college transcript, the AP credits show up as college classes with the grade of “P” on them.

So, the school takes the AP exam score and determines which of its class(es) the exam is equivalent to, and then puts that class (or classes) on the transcript with a grade of “P.”

That’s what I meant by saying that I doubted that P’s count as "C"s because kids like my kids would have a bunch of P’s on their transcripts from AP credits

Mom2, check to see how they’re listed on the transcript. Here’s how it worked for me:

I started college fall semester 07. I took calc 2 through St Louis University’s dual enrollment program at my high school during my senior year, which ended with what colleges call spring semester 07. Since the credit is from SLU, it shows up on my university’s transcript as “Spring 2007 SLU Main Campus” credit for calc 2, complete with grade. Even though I took it during high school, it showed up on my college transcript as credit for a specific course with a grade. This calculus class counted toward my AMCAS GPA and I had to send a SLU transcript to AMCAS too.

I took AP Bio, AP Chem, and AP Calc in high school too. This shows up on my transcript as “Fall 2007 Exam Credit.” Then it lists the 6 courses I got credit for by taking the AP exams, the credit hours those courses were worth, and instead of a grade it says “CR.”

When I was filling out the AMCAS, I just followed the instructions and entered the courses exactly like they showed up on my transcript (so instead of writing AP Bio, junior year of high schoo, A…I wrote “BIO1500: Intro Biological Systems with Lab, 5h, CR”) My application was verified by AMCAS and the AP credits (which showed up as those courses with CR as the grade) did not affect my GPA in the slightest.

The only course from high school that affected my AMCAS GPA was the calculus class I took through dual enrollment with St Louis University that carried a SLU transcript.

Hope this helps!

I copy/pasted a few of the AP’s listed on my son’s transcript…as you can see, they get listed as regular college classes with a grade of “P”.

Subject Course Title …Grade Credit Hours Quality Points

BSC 114 PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGY I P 3.000 0.000

BSC 115 LABORATORY BIOLOGY I P 1.000 0.000

BSC 116 PRINCIPLES BIOLOGY II P 3.000 0.000

BSC 117 BIOLOGY II LABORATORY P 1.000 0.000

CH 101 GENERAL CHEMISTRY P 4.000 0.000

CH 102 GENERAL CHEMISTRY P 4.000 0.000

Does his transcript note that they’re exam credit anywhere? My exam credits are listed separately from my “local campus” credits, and both are separate from my “St Louis University” and “St Louis Community College” credits.

Additionally, there’s a box on the AMCAS website that you can check (while you’re entering scores) to designate AP credit. Check out the instructions (they’re available on the AMCAS website) for more information.

Yes…

The credits are listed separately and indicate at the top of the section that they’re:

TRANSFER CREDIT ACCEPTED BY INSTITUTION
Adv Place: Advanced Placement

On my transcripts it says
“TRANSFER CREDIT ACCEPTED BY INSTITUTION”
and underneath it says
"Pre College: Advanced Placement Prog (AP) "
and then in the grade spot it has TR for transfer. It doesn’t effect my grade calculations in my school and I don’t see why it would play a factor in my GPA on the AMCAS app, especially in such a negative way as a 2.0.

It won’t. At all. Ever.
