Sounds about right…I was applying to many Ivys (and similar) in 90s…I think Penn was in 30-40% range. It was my best friend’s safety . Can you imagine? It wasn’t even a reach for me (I think was low target kind of thing…) My actual safeties now have between 10-15% acceptances. Different world.
It looks like you guys are moving on from P, but I think this thread is still really valuable. Lots of us have had similar experiences.
My youngest was totally turned off by MIT, which was kind of shocking to me (DH, I, and both of his brothers attended - one UG and one G, and I thought it was temperamentally very in line with DS3 also).
I’m an oldest child, but I bet some of you who are younger siblings, who read this, will say, “sure, he obviously wants to do something that you guys all did NOT do”
I always like to point to this 1960 Life Magazine article for a snapshot of what these conversations looked like now 60+ years ago:
Some of the quoted comments are hilarious. Under Penn, someone actually said, “In admissions seems to consider average student.”
So, yeah, things change.
On the other hand, reading the Princeton comments . . . I will not add anything, but in the context of the OP’s report it is funny in its own way.
that is amazing! thanks for sharing - I have never seen that, and did LOL at the princeton one…
In terms of additional archival material, Princeton was the only Ivy included
as a Top Ten school in the Preppy Handbook (1980) under The College of Your Choice.
For anyone wishing to pinpoint the journey taken by Princeton’s image over the past half-century, I have two words for you: Woodrow Wilson.
Since when does Vanderbilt do interviews?
My daughter had an interview, but this was awhile ago.
