I want to apply to the following universities’ Econ program.
UPenn (ED legacy)
Cornell
Berkeley
CMU
JHU
NYU
UVA
Race: Egyptian-American studying abroad (international student)
GPA: 3.9 UW (my school doesn’t have weighted)
Rank: top 10% (schools ranking system is stupid… People take easy courses get ranked highly.)
SAT: 2160 (math 800, CR 680, W 680)
Haven’t taken SAT 2 yet…
ECs:
President of Debate club
President of the Academics Department
President of the Finance club
Secretary General of MUN 2 times
President of ECOSOC council 3 times
Best delegate award 3 times in ECOSOC (one time they were all college students and I was the only highschool student at Cairo International MUN. There were students from Harvard and Columbia.)
1st Place International debate competition (SABIS STARS)
2 time winner Highschool Math Olympiad.
Editor and chief and Creator of school newsletter.
Chosen to compete at MSA University science fair.
Co-Creator of the ECSR (Egyptian Council of Student Representatives), an NGONPO that gathers rich English speaking students nationwide to help with Egypt’s education problem with charity and fundraising efforts.
(Sorry for limited ECs… Egypt doesn’t give me a lot of opportunities)
Summer internship as research assistant at an investment bank.
How do I stack up with each University
UPenn (ED legacy): reach, even with legacy probably
Cornell: reach
Berkeley:low reach,high match
CMU: reach
JHU: low reach
NYU: match
UVA: reach
Take SAT II ASAP
Do you need FA?
OK I’m not reach at UVA… Their average SAT is a 2040…
UVA prefers in state over out of state, that means that no matter how good you are if you are OOS then it is automatically a reach.
Plus, if you need FA, applying to UVa and NYU is most likely to be a waste of time because they offer little to no FA to international kids. Same for UCB, except you will get NONE
Oh. Well I doubt I’m a reach in everything… Not a safety but at least a match.
And no… UVA covers financial Aid 100% (I’m an american citizen BTW.)
UVA OOS has always been very competitive. If you look around in CC you will see plenty of OOS kids who got rejected from UVA but get in top tier schools. Similarly, I have also seen kids who get rejected from UMichigan(which also favors in state kids) but get in Stanford. Also,UVA’s OOS admissions pool includes applicants with various hooks – athletes, minority candidates and legacies (who get considered at a selectivity level comparable to IS applicants). So the chances of an “unhooked” OOS applicant are going to less than the stated 25%(OOS acceptance rate)
Since you are a citizen, then UVa does offer 100% FA(didn’t see Egyptian-American parts). However, you still won’t get any FA from UCB
Edit:
UPenn (ED legacy): reach, but legacy is nice.
Cornell: reach
Berkeley:low reach,high match
CMU: reach. Quite unpredictable
JHU: low reach/high match
NYU: match
UVA: reach
Ow! I got a bump. Haha get it? Bump…
“Oh. Well I doubt I’m a reach in everything… Not a safety but at least a match.”
You’re asking for people’s opinions; don’t dismiss their thoughts. It seems as though you have your own “chances” results in your mind, and you want people to relay that information to you in order to feel self-assured.
Not at all, I just don’t believe that I’m a reach in all. Same as if someone told me I was safety all… Doesn’t make sense that’s it
