So What Are You Really, Really Good at?

@VeryHappy I plan for activities depending on the event. I had a casino night last year for my brothers birthday. I had everyone bring a $10 gift for prizes. They got tickets for their chips and the carrying on over the drawing for winners was hilarious.
I have a pool and people seem to enjoy corn hole at night. I have Sonos speakers all over the house and yard and also use a fogger for bug control.
I also make themed cocktails.
For inside parties I have a pool table and ping pong.
Cocktail parties are nice but I find people have more fun when there is something to do.

Finding/picking gifts for little kids that the kids and parents love.

I am really good at tutoring and essays (no, not a plug.) It just took me a really long time to find my thing, probably because life and kids got in the way.

I didn’t realize I was so good at tutoring until I had to start turning away customers. I felt guilty, because I get a lot of satisfaction from helping my students. I love that my job is something I created from nothing. A couple of years of nagging from hubby was the kick up the backside I needed to get started.

I love writing and reading essays. When I write long posts here on CC, or long emails to people, I go back and reread them. I have a few favorite posters here on CC whose posts I will read multiple times, especially if they are essay-like in composition. It annoys me that I can’t edit after fifteen minutes, because I could edit everything to death for hours just for fun.

I love helping my students with their essays. When the kid and I meet for our first session, something magical happens. There’s a synthesis of thought and feeling that comes together and it’s super fun and exciting to see the student, who thinks she has nothing to say, get excited about an idea and watch it come to fruition. I will reread some of my favorite student essays, but I can’t do that often because then I might pick them apart. I have to remind myself that they were written by teenagers.

I’m really good at learning new software technologies. I’m also good at figuring out how to trouble-shoot and solve computer issues.

I was a religious studies major in college, way before there were personal computers. I’ve worked in IT for the past 20 years.

Because of my background, I’m also really good at working with and helping non-technical people.

@eyemamom You forgot to mention when your next party is and give us your address for google so we can get there.

I am also pretty good at organizing fun parties. But apparently I am also pretty good at having some “friends” who only call when they want help with something. I seem to have a talent for attracting some people who are takers, and don’t reciprocate kindness. Time to stop returning those phone calls.

Oh yes, @CountingDown . I am an amazing vacation planner. I am gong to not even humble-brag. My friends know to call me first whenever they are going somewhere. I’ve been to over thirty countries, and I find the best places to go, at the best price. I am going to go on vacations forever, as long as I physically and financially can afford it.

My favorite vacation ever: hmmm, that’s tough. Pre or post kids? Okay, hands down, China with my hubby and kids. The kids were 11 and 13. We went everywhere we could go in 16 days and it was just incredible. Next might be Bali when it was just me and hub.

Almost forgot. I am good at finding deals in the web (travel, hotels, rental cars, shopping).

I am really, really good at making those with strong housekeeping & organizational skills feel needed & appreciated.

I am really good at worrying. Seriously.

I am also good at finding the perfect gift, but because I am so good at worrying, I worry too much about gift-giving.

And I am also good at old-school bench chemistry. If you need someone to run a metal-halogen exchange or maybe a Birch reduction, then I’m your chemist. But if you want someone to run a coupling reaction with some of these new-fangled catalysts…well, I need to mosey on over to the “absolutely terrible” thread for a moment.

I am also really, really good at making dogs feel loved & cherished–which is no easy feat as they tend to throw it right back at you.

P.S. Also, good to see that no one claimed “posing for before photos”.

Crossword puzzles, though I am not a speed solver. Do the NYT puzzle every day and am working through their archive.
Cooking - and in particularly adapting recipes to the ingredients I have. This is an important skill when you belong to a CSA!
Watercolor painting. I’m also not to bad at ink brush painting for a beginner.

Nothing.

I am really really (that was the question, right? double really?) good at nothing. (sigh) Kind of disappointing. I am good at lots of things that many people can’t do. But I feel like I have mastered nothing. The old Jack of all trades master of none guy. Always considered myself a good athlete (again, not a great athlete) but just to humble myself I started playing golf, and I really suck at golf.

Well, NJres, You made me LOL which not many can do!

I am really good at picking the best avocados in the supermarket and cutting them open on just the right day. I’m also good at finding valuable information on the internet.

I’m good at a lot of stuff but I don’t have anything that I am really, really, good at it. It’s all things I consider myself to be better than the average person but not good enough to be one of the top.

Tutoring/teaching math
Needlework
Scrapbooking
Planning schedules for other people with lots of constraints.

Oh something else I am really good at is figuring out the smallest container that will hold leftovers.

I’m good at time management and subsequently moderation. I have a well honed sense of time. I like to plan things and make sure I have the time to do them. When choosing activities or hobbies I know when I’ve reached a point where I either need to invest more time and resources or back off. I like to do a lot of things so I tend to be a master of none.
