<p>When they say, “language other than English,” can you count a creole language with an English superstrate but with Malay, Hokkien and various other substrates? It has its own modified phonology, stress system and even fixed contour tones for modal particles (resembling the Chinese dialects!). I’ve been saying “Singlish creole” for a while now, but I wonder if I should write it as something else (Singaporean creole, etc.?)</p>
<p>I’m supposedly ethnically Chinese, but basically what I know of the Chinese language (from tonal system to borrowed vocabulary of dialects) is in this creole, along with many other languages’ grammar systems and vocabulary.</p>
