Im a Sophomore with a 4.0 and i forgot to turn in a paper for Weightlifting… Im pretty sure that it will bring my semester rade down to a B or maybe even a C =[… How much will this hurt me getting into college??? Will it look bad that i made it in a bullcrap class?

Oh no, ruined your perfect GPA?

Sorry for the sarcasm, I know you must be beating yourself up more on the inside, but from what I’ve read, most colleges regard a 3.7 and a 4.0 as the exact same thing. And the poor grade wasn’t in a core class either, so I wouldn’t sweat it too much. One minor discrepancy on your transcript shouldn’t kill your chances anywhere.

EDIT: btw, a B (or even a C) really isn’t that bad

3.7 is a far cry from a 4.0 at least at my school. The difference between a 3.7 and 3.8 is the difference between extremely-likely to uva and not-likely at my school. Try to do whatever you can to fix your grade but if there’s nothing you can do, just kick some more ass. You’ve got 1.5+ years to make up for it.

um…does ur school weigh A-s and As differently then?

I believe most do. Some weigh A and A+ the same, however.

To the OP: contact your teacher and see if you can submit the paper late. Even if you can’t, the majority of colleges only consider your academic courses when they recalculate your GPA. If your school does class ranking this will hurt you there, but no college in the country is going to reject because your only non-A is in weight training.

you had to write a paper in weight training?

Yeah, writing a paper in weight lifting makes no sense…

When I took a Weight Lifting as sophomore, all we had to do was our required workouts then go play basketball…

Don’t worry about breaking your 4.0 as a sophomore. There are going to be plenty more opportunities to break that precious GPA. ;)

(By the way, I broke my 4.0 sophomore year by getting an A- in H. Algebra 2. Brought it down to a 3.913.)

Wait, I thought colleges only look at the final grade for the year? So if you get a B+ one semester, and an A+ the other, wouldn’t it average out to an A and colleges/GPA wouldn’t know any different?

I have read that sometimes anything that’s not a core class isn’t considered, and sometimes they do other things to reweight the GPA in relation to A+/- and stuff.

my school doesnt grade a- and a different.(not that i know of)

Writing papers in PE classes is normal at my school, i think its some sort of dumb district requirement…its not like they’re actually graded on quality though. In PE 1 we were asked to “describe our favorite sport” and one of my friends did Competitive Sleeping…

Anyway, this little tick on your GPA won’t kill you. I got my first B in Health as a sophomore, so I’m pretty much in the “OMG how did you get a grade like that in such a dumb class???” boat as you are. It didn’t hurt my applications at all as far as I can tell. I got into Harvey Mudd, UVA, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, Rensselaer, CU-Boulder and Colorado School of Mines. The only place I was rejected was MIT, but they reject 4.0 students too(and admit kids with 3.6s who showed their talent in other ways). You will easily be able to cover this tiny blemish by doing other things for your college app. Extracurricular activities, and your essay are far more important than the fact that you brought your GPA down to a 3.97 or whatever.

To a certain extent, getting a B early on is a good thing. It keeps you from becoming an overobsessed OCD GPA nerd that doesn’t even take AP classes because they are afraid of losing their perfect 4.0. You’ve already lost it, so what the heck? You can go out on a limb and try all kinds of fun things, and more likely than not, you’ll be more of the type of person that colleges are looking for these days. They’re not looking for robots, they’re looking for real kids…and real kids get Bs and even Cs sometimes.
