The show needs to stop doing just contemporary, jazz, and broadwa, and hip hop. That is all I’ve seen with some few exceptions here and there. Alexander did a decent job, but I think the choreography did him and sasha in before the judges. Since day 1, I’ve thought chris was a weak dancer. He lacks confidence and was unable to sell a routine since the show started. The salsa he did this week was quite possibly the worst salsa I’ve ever seen in my life. They need to get more into the ballroom and latin dances, and NO, that does not mean I’m giving the OK for tadd and jordan to come back and do a third waltz variation. *** is this.

Just please…no more Bollywood! That was the worst one ever.

Who went home?

I am still a Melanie and Marko fan, but Catlynn and Mitchell’s piece blew everyone out of the water this week. I didn’t like Jess at the beginning, but am liking him more and more. Don’t get the Ryan fan club, but each dancer has their talent.

I don’t know if the couples that are not connecting with each other is more one dancer is weaker or they just aren’t great together. Maybe with a different partner, each would do better. Too bad we can’t score the choreographers; I think Sasha and Alexander were given a terrible piece this week that did not showcase their dance abilities.

Not related to their dancing, but Jess and his surprise face when he is complemented and Melanie’s giggle for some reason bother me. I can’t tell if it is just Melanie’s personality or a nervous laugh.

Ashley and her partner Chris.

@churchmusicmom post #187, my daughter and I also noticed the guy stage left who was behind the beat, but we thought it was Chris. Don’t have DVR so can’t be sure.

I think the guest judges are just there for comic relief, which the show really does not need. Three judges are more than enough, but I do like Cat Deely as host(ess).

And I agree they should never do Bollywood again. I don’t think it’s fair for the contestants who draw a crappy style or mediocre choreography. There’s only so much they can do with it, and I don’t think the American audience is going to vote for Bollywood no matter how well it is done. And I, for one, don’t know what’s good Bollywood and what’s not, but I like the colorful costumes.

musicmom1215, I just go by what my D the dancer says. The guy that looked out of it to me was the one who had the brown hoodie pulled up over his head for most of the dance. Whoever that was…

I LOVE Cat Deely!!! I absolutely think she should win an Emmy. She has online video segments called “In the Dressing Room with Cat Deely” that are pretty fun to watch, to me any way. Just about how she and her “team” come up with her looks for the show.

See, I LIKE Bollywood. I think it’s exciting (when done well), incredibly high-energy and demanding of precision. You cannot fake through it, that’s for sure! I loved the group piece this past week.

To each his/her own, I suppose. It will be very interesting when they get to the top 10 dancers and pull in the allstars to dance with them. It seems they must be trying not to split any couples up until then…

I love Cat Deeley, too, comparing her to Ryan Seacrest on AI, she actually seems to care about the dancers & have compassion whilst being cute & funny, too. She is not smarmily slick.

I finally was able to catch the full show. I was watching each dance individually online, but it wasn’t showing the back story or setting the scene, so I just wasn’t getting the dances. Yes, the two that were voted off were the right ones. Mitchell was my favorite and Melanie and Marko’s dance didn’t grab me this week. Ryan also was amazing this week … she surprised me so now I see why the judges like her so much.

I can’t stand Cat Deely .Sure ,she is eye candy ,but most of her comments are annoying . They should have a former dance champ ,who is attractive as well . Maybe someone from an early season of SYTYCD .

“I love Cat Deeley, too, comparing her to Ryan Seacrest on AI”

I’m in agreement with the two moms above, somemom and churchmusicmom. She makes hosting look easy and fun while most hosts tend to look a little awkward and forced at times. I think she’s a real pro and definitely should be mentioned with Seacrest as the top TV hosts today.

“Just please…no more Bollywood!”

It can be great. I loved Joshua and Katee’s routine from a few seasons back.

“I LOVE Cat Deely!!! I absolutely think she should win an Emmy.”

I agree! I think she’s great at her job. She’s kind and supportive to the dancers and she’s not afraid to call the judges on some of their comments. She seems like she’s having a great time up there and is very smooth and unflappable.

I wish they’d dump all the celebrity judges, who’ve added absolutely nothing, and add a rule that only one of the judges may comment about what wonderful job the choreographer did. I found the judges comments to be a lot more useful a couple of seasons ago – part of what I’m looking for is learning what experts are seeing that I’m not, and it is very, very rare to get this from any of them any longer.

I also wish they’d impose a requirement on the ballroom dances that they have to follow competition standards with at most two or three lifts. That excuse for a waltz – that they rhapsodized over – was a great example of what we shouldn’t be seeing. I have no idea if they can actually waltz because they didn’t.

I’d agree that Bollywood ought to be dropped along with Russian Folk Dance – one great routine (Katee and Joshua’s) does not a successful genre make, and I’d drop the quickstep for similar reasons. But I’d love to see them include jive and swing as regular styles.

I think that the degree to which they focus on contemporary dance is disappointing – after a while, I get really, really tired of all the teenage angst routines.

^^ Forgive me, I can’t remember whether or not you’re a dance parent. But if you’ve ever been to a competition, you’ll know why I always go get something to eat when they get to senior lyrical solos. It’s 15 or 20 angst-y dances in a row. It gets very boring. I see traces of that in many of the girls’ DFYL solos on the show.

I agree, get rid of ballroom and bollywood, and add tap! Or is tap so difficult that even these accomplished dancers can’t master it in a week?

Signed,
Mom of Tapper :D

LasMa, one of the reasons I was so disappointed to see the guy who’s speciality was tap go early this season was that Nigel “teased” us into thinking they might be able to include tap choreography this year in the competition. He said that was because several of the girls also can tap.

So, no, it apparently is NOT reasonable to expect even these accomplished dancers to learn and “master” tap in one week!

I am also the mom of a tapper and have taken it myself …and came nowhere near mastering it in a couple of YEARS! :)

Not just the solos. The whole lyrical category - nappytime! If your kid was in the categoy you sort of had to only doze so you didn’t miss your own. But otherwise, time to scoot down and catch some Zzzzs to the soothing music.

No, not a dance parent – but I am a rather serious fan of figure skating, and I give great thanks that figure skaters don’t all do angsty routines, because I don’t know how I’d sit through two or three days of competition and practice if that’s what I had to watch. The thing is that in figure skating I’ve learned to see a lot of the defects, which makes the judging generally a lot more understandable, and it is frustrating that a show like SYTYCD that has judges who are clearly qualified to give feedback chooses so often not to. I think I’ve learned more about dance from Dancing with the Stars, and that’s sad.

(And sometimes they’re rhapsodizing over a dance when even I saw a number of problems, and I wonder what they saw that overwhelmed the problems and made the dance so fabulous in their minds.)

Ballroom should not be removed! It encompasses at least eight dances
What would you be left with. Ballroom on this show is not well choreographed. A waltz should never have lifts and rarely break hold. It can still be done beautifully (see Derek houghs choreo on dwts ). Also ballroom has been performed quite weakly this season. See chelsie hightower for an exemplar.

Wow - I thought they were all pretty good tonight. I think maybe it’s Sasha’s time to go though.

Agree on Cat Deely. She does a great job.

My favorite couples tonight were Sasha and Alexander, Melanie and Marko and Jess and Clarice.

I think Ryan and Ricky were pretty disappointing, particularly Ryan on the cha cha.

I totally think Cat Deely deserves an Emmy.
