I hope, I hope! He’s one of my favorite SYTYCD-ers ever. We thought we spotted him at the SF audition which prompted us to go back and watch his duo with Twitch. Fantastic!

Just so nobody misses it: SYTYCD comes on tonight AND tomorrow night! :)

Thanks…I was waiting for tomorrow night…whew!

It is the one show that my 16 year old boy still watches with me. We just love it! I loved the little brunette girl, and the girl with the long curly blonde hair that I wanted in the top 20 last season. I think it should be a great season.
One thing that drove me crazy last week was the fact that although they kept talking about San Francisco, the actual theater location was in beautiful downtown Oakland! I love the Paramount theater and I wish they would have acknowledged the city.

Way to much plastic surgery (botox?) going on on the judging panel tonight!!

My feelings too!

My favorites from tonight were the Irish step dancer, and the jazz guy with the suspenders. I hate when the judges make dancers like those two go through choreography because they’re “not sure how they’ll do with a partner” – and then send hiphoppers and b-boys straight to Vegas.

I think there’s a lot that the judges know but we don’t about the background of the dancers. Some of the “street” dancers in prior years turn out to have studied a wide variety of dance in studio for several years; they audition as hip-hop or whatever for the storyline. Some of the other specialty dancers (like Irish, ballroom, step, Broadway, etc.) really don’t have much training outside that one style.

I also have read that some of the dancers have been recruited to audition by TPTB and the only way they don’t get sent on to Vegas is if they fall off the stage. Reality shows are getting less and less real every year  . I’m shocked - shocked - to find out there’s gambling going on, hmm? ;)

I thought Nigel was way out of line with his comments to the girl with amnesia. It was hardly funny (her mom was obviously very emotional about it) but he kept on with the jokes. I was cringing for her…

I agree. But in some ways I think maybe they are looking to make the Vegas part of the show more interesting (with all the different styles). And they also probably do consider the dancers’ resumes for background in other styles…But it does seem pretty arbitrary.

I like that they seem to not be focusing quite as much on the awful dancers as in the past. Or maybe it seems that way because I just fast forwarded through most of the “my father is Ringo Starr” schtick. That was terrible!

I missed it, was her father Ringo Starr?

^The whole Ringo Starr thing was the dumbest thing ever. Why do a story on something so outlandish? Some sort of human interest story on one of the serious dancers’ background would have been interesting. They shouldn’t waste the viewers’ time with ridiculous stunts. We could watch America’s Got Talent for that.

Her father was not Ringo Starr of the Beatles. He may have been some other sort of Ringo though!

Wasted too much time on that stupid story. I would’ve preferred more dancers, even the bad ones!

One of last year’s story lines was Jose, the hiphopper who couldn’t do anything else – and yet was kept week after week at the expense of better, more versatile dancers. (Mia at one point was reduced to saying, “Sure you didn’t dance well, but we love your HEART.”) The only reason I could see for Jose’s prolonged stay was the producers’ desire to have a “street” dancer as the winner, instead of the usual contemporary/lyrical. It makes sense from their standpoint; that’s a whole new demographic they could attract.

Fast forward to this year’s auditions. Alot of breakers/krumpers/hiphoppers were sent straight to Vegas without having to demonstrate that they can learn other disciplines. I think the producers are still hoping for a non-traditional winner this year. And maybe some of the b-boys also have classical training and will turn in a perfect pasa doble down the road – but I would bet against it.

Just watched the audition rounds from NYC and LA. Waited for my D to return from school (BC '12) and watched it with her, since it is her very favorite show. It was nice to see that Los Angeles was so well-represented overall. I DO wish that there were more Ballroom dancers in the competition, however. The “breakers/krumpers/hiphoppers” and poppers seem to be in big supply this season! Speaking of which, I really liked Hiro (or Hero?), the girl originally from Japan who auditioned in LA.

Who’s watching?

Did Jeremy make it through? After all the hype about the returning dancers, they didn’t show us whether he made the cut. I didn’t see him in the penthouse.

Sorry, I watched, but I don’t remember which one he was.

I was disappointed they didn’t show all the group numbers! I would prefer that over the drama of the dancers needing medical attention.

We’re on tape delay, so not sure yet from this time zone.

I am, however, ready to go and strangle the producer who’s choosing those camera angles. You’d think that they’d understand that it would be nice to see the whole group during group dances. I think it is the same guy who decides that we don’t need to see the skates on the ice and just shows the top half of the skater.

Is Jeremy the one who had the meltdown in a past year? They never really finished the story to let us know if he was one of those who got to go upstairs to the suite. My understanding is that there are still over 30 dancers and they have to get own to 20?

^^ I believe next week the judges narrow it down to 20. There were shots of the dancers being interviewed onstage. I got the impression that Jeremy made it to the suite; at least, the last time I saw him he was crying for joy.

Natalia has a dramatic storyline, but IMO she just isn’t in the same league with the rest of the remaining dancers. But then, I always forget that this is first and foremost a TV show, not a dance competition.

It was good to see Robert again; he was our pick last season. :)
