So you wanna go to Pitt? (Class of 2012 Seniors)

Oh okay, that’s one thing I wasn’t sure about because it wasn’t listed as a minor, but as long as i’m still able to take Psychology courses that’s great! Thank you for that info!

Hi PittPeerAdvisor,

I’m confident I’d be able to get into Pitt. I have mid-600’s SATs, top 2% in my class of 587, AP/Honors, NHS, and a few extracurriculars. I hope to do Biology as Pre-med, do you know anyone who has done it and if it is a decent route? Also, it seems (from reading the cc boards) that a lot of science profs/TAs are foreign. Is this true? Is it as hard to deal with as some people make it seem? Lastly, can I request Lothrop or do most health science majors get it?

Thanks

When I was little, I lived in Sq. Hill, and my bedroom window had a view of the Catherdral, and I always thoughth Pitt was the only college, and everyone went there, lol. Now that I know there are other schools, Pitt is still my first choice. International business anyone?

@russiangirl28 awww! Thats such a cute story! Haha wow, what a view…I love that Cathedral…now it could possibly be our view as students there :3

hopefully! I am visiting Pitt this friday (june 24th) ! Is anyone else going?

A few tips from when I applied

Apply as early as possible, apply when the app comes out in July/August. Theyre rolling admissions so the earlier the better.

If you are unsure of what you want to study, like business or engineering, just apply to the Liberal Arts school, the other schools are extremely selective and you can be placed in them after your freshman year. Liberal Arts is the easiest to get into.

If you get denied, call an admission rep or email them and asked to be reconsidered. Many people on here have been readmitted to the school from this. But you have to have something to show, like wait til quarter grades come out and send them in.

Try to be as involved with the school as possible. Obviously you wont have anything to do with the school by just applying, but if you had a rep go to your school, express your interest to him. Write your essay about what the school means to you. Pitt loves people who love Pitt. They take school interest very seriously.

I unfortunately was denied from the business school last fall, I called my school rep and he said to email him expressing my interest to be reconsidered with my quarter grades. He said I should definitely be able to get into the Liberal arts school. Unfortunately he never returned my calls or emails and I never got a response from him and I gave up after a few months. I got the hint but that shouldnt stop any of you! Pitt is an awesome school and Pittsburgh is an awesome city! Im going to Duquesne anyway which is in downtown Pitt :p

Good luck to all seniors applying!

I have a bunch of friends who have done Bio or Neuro as a pre-med track. They love it, and I think it’s a perfectly good way to do pre-med.

As for Profs/TAs being foreign: I only ever had one foreign professor. My Chem professor in the fall. However, that has nothing to do with the quality of his teaching. I’m in the engineering school (a LOT of foreign Profs/TAs) and have never encountered a communication problem with anyone. So, I wouldn’t worry about that…

You can request Lothrop as your first choice for housing. I had an English-major friend live there his sophomore year, so it’s definitely not limited to health science majors. A lot of them just choose to live there (as a first choice) because it’s so close to their classes. (But uh, if you’re interested in Bio, Lothrop is actually pretty far from Clapp Hall (where the Bio classes are), just FYI).

@SpiderJames Thanks for all the valuable tips! Aww, i’m sorry to hear everything didn’t go as planned for Pitt. Was it your first choice school? And how early did you apply?..Pitt is DEFINTELY my dream school and I am a Pittsburgher haha. Good luck at Duquesne! :D

@russiangirl28 Oh awesome! I’m going in a month! I would love to hear about your experience there! Were you doing the summer overnight?

Sent from my M860 using CC App

@melox93 No I’m just going to visit during the day. During the school year I want to stay overnight, when there will be people living on campus!

I’m an OOS applicant (Michigan) and Pitt sounds really cool. I always loved the city.

@russiangirl28 So, how was your visit there? :)

Sent from my M860 using CC App

@melox82 My visit went great.! The dorm rooms for freshmen (doubles) are kind of small, but other than that I really liked everything about the campus! I went for the “So you want to be a…” days, and it was super helpful. We got to meet some professors, who briefly (45 mins) discussed some of the courses Business students would have to take. It was a great experiance, and if you have the chance to sign up for any of their visit days for this upcoming summer, you should go!

@russiangirl28 That sounds awesome! Gahh i’m SO excited to go in July! I didn’t know that the professors talk to you too! gets excited

@Melox93 I am an in state student and I go high school a block away from Pitt and I don’t know if you have ever been to the campus, but it is lovely, it isn’t your typical urban campus, but it gives you access to the city too. I suggest visiting on a “So you want to be a…” day, that’s what I am doing and apparently its great.

@MagicMatt So you’re really close to the campus if you go there! Oakland is about 35 or so minutes away from me. I LOVE the atmosphere of Oakland  I’ll be going to a campus tour next month!

@russiangirl28 well i was there lol…and i stayed overnight…i probably stood out the most…lets leave it at that lol

@908kiddo Hi! I plan on doing the overnight this month! How was that experience for you? Did you like it?

Sent from my M860 using CC App

@melox93 the overnight stay was sooo fun…i actually went to the business program/information session in the beginning of the day, then that slowly turned into the overnight stay.

at first, we had to sign up in the towers, afterwards, a pathfinder showed me to my room, which was on the fourth floor i think ( i think the girls were on the 11th and the boys were on the 4th or 3rd, i forgot lol) ; when i got to my room, my roommates belongings were already in there, but that’s besides the point.

after i put my luggage away, another pathfinder took me to the cathedral, where there was a park, well not a park, but a field. we broke into 4 big groups, and did ice breakers to start things off, then we played a few games/sports related activities.

after about an hour or so of that, we headed over to what i believe was a library, and we at lunch outside of it…we stayed there for nearly 2 hours and one of the pathfinders gave us choices of what we wanted to do after we got back from our bus tour of the city, i believe that the choices were watching a movie, going on another tour, hanging out in the lounge, and walking around the city with a pathfinder, almost 75% chose the movie though lol and then we headed on a bus tour of pittsburgh…that took about 30 minutes, then we headed back to alumni hall, then we broke off into our selected activities…after our activities were over, we headed back to the towers ( we were told to be back at 11 oclock or else, wont mention the or else part though lol)

we got to the towers and we went to our room, then the lounges for some pizza, but mainly to fill out our applications given to us…the applications didnt require and academic records though…then after that was basically free time for us, the pathfinders let us roam the halls, we didnt have a bedtime or anything of that nature, i even saw some people in the halls just hanging out when i went to use the bathroom at around 3am lol, even though just had to wake up again the next morning at 615 lol

the next morning was just full information sessions and tours…overall i loved it, i just wish it was longer and the weather was nicer lol…the pathfinders are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, it seems like theyre programmed to be nice and have awesome personalities, and i mean that in a nice way lol…

hope this wasnt too long (i know i was though lol) and i hope you enjoy your experience  let me know how it goes for you.

@908kiddo xD wow im SO excited! Thahks for sharing that! now i’ll know what to expect! I go in 19 days gets excited It probably went really fast because it was fun! Haha… Is Pitt your first choice school too? :)
