I’ll put in my vote for the Chicago Lyric Opera ($20 student tickets for amazing seats… much better than the $300 normal patrons have to pay!), about 6 miles.

if you check the facebook group, there’s a thread like this. and it posts most of these plus many more.

See the musical RENT for twenty dollars. Every performance, the front row seats are sold ($20) the day of the performance at the theater. It’s at the Oriental Theater, a restored landmark.

There is a Hot Tix booth across the street from the Art Institute, same day tickets for two or three dozen different shows, half price. And the booth is located in a free art exhibit. Currently showing art inspired by the Obama campaign.

Go to the Walnut Room at Macy’s. Over the top spring flowers there this week.

Order big bowl of soup and a coke, bill including tip, less than ten dollars.

Chicago Symphony orchestra had some deal (I believe they still do) where you get a pair of seats to five shows or so over the course of a season, where the costs comes out to like $15-25 a seat depending on how good the view is. You can then hawk the second seat to a friend or whatever.

Student tickets to the CSO are $10 if you don’t particularly feel like committing to a number of shows. They also have an option for some sold-out, very popular concerts where, for $40, you fill up empty space until the person gets there; if they come during intermission, you’ll have seen half a great concert and get your money back, and if they don’t come at all, you’ll usually wind up with a great seat. A few years back I saw Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, which had been sold out for about six months before I even found out about it, from the 4th row in the seat of some ridiculous person who never showed up.

Be sure to make at least one late-night food run to Chinatown. Seven Treasures, BBQ King…how I miss thee.

I can’t wait to be in Chicago

Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, Lawrence Fisheries located at 22nd and Canal. The very best fried shrimp in the world. [Lawrence’s Fisheries](http://www.lawrencesfisheries.com/)

Tomorrow, Wednesday admission to the Museum of Science and Industry is free. It is just northeast of campus and kitty corner from Broadview Hall dorm.

The Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute both have free days as well.

Today, Sat and Sunday: USA Siegerin Show, in Arlington Heights, take Metra from downtown. This is a national show for German Shepherd Dogs with classes in conformation, obedience and protection…all ages and levels and also progeny groups (offspring shown with their sire).

For something completely different.

The Oriental Institute Museum (history, art, and archaeology of the ancient Near East) is located right on campus and is one of my favorite museums anywhere. [Oriental Institute | The Oriental Institute Museum](http://oi.uchicago.edu/museum/) The Field Museum, a global treasure, is located north of the U of C campus, off of Lake Shore Drive about 6 miles away. Our family goes there many times a year. [Welcome to The Field Museum](http://www.fieldmuseum.org/)
