@Araneae 1580
Got in as well. 35 on the ACT.
Got in, I’d be happy to share stats if people are interested. Best of luck to everyone who applied!
I get that que sera, sera, but is getting into SOAR a good indication of getting into the university come admissions?
I got in!
Congrats to everyone that got in. I was rejected without fee waiver but my essay wasn’t exactly the best. I really regret not working more on it.
got rejected. my test scores are low so i had that coming
I know several people here at Rice who got rejected from SOAR, me included. I wouldn’t worry tooooooooo much.
SOAR has very few openings, and preference is given to certain underrepresented groups. If you search the SOAR threads from past years, commenters say an invite to SOAR is tantamount to being admitted to Rice. However, as @awesomepolyglot says above, being turned down from SOAR is not an indication that you would not be admitted to Rice if you applied. In fact, applying to SOAR was a great way to demonstrate your interest in Rice and get on Rice’s radar screen.
Yes, that’s right. Rice heavily considers URM status in its admission decisions so plenty of people rejected by SOAR will ultimately be admitted to the university.
Thanks for the reassuring words! I feel much better knowing that this rejection doesn’t affect admissions to the university.
I’ve never been to a fly-in op before. What’s a range of how much I should bring to the weekend if I’m not splurging on food or shopping a lot?
Just bring a small amount of spending money maybe $50.00 and a credit or debit card if you have one for any emergencies. You should not have many expenses. I assume Rice is providing or reimbursing your transportation from the airport to campus. Rice provides all of the on campus meals during SOAR. You will also get Rice swag while you are at SOAR. You might want to buy a coffee at the Rice Coffee House or some stuff at the campus store. Your host may take you into the nearby Rice Village for a late night snack, ice cream, etc. Most of your time will be filled with activities on campus.
Pro tip: get a lemon square from Coffee House.
Thanks for the suggestions @Houston1021! And will do @awesomepolyglot!
To those that got in, have you received any emails since submitting the consent and travel detail forms?
@tiger5012 I got my flight details a few days ago. Did anyone else sign up for an admissions officer interview there?
If you have not gotten your flight details and want to verify Rice Admissions received your materials, call or email the admissions office at 713-348-RICE(7423) or admission@rice.edu. The admissions office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central (Houston) time.
If you’re going to SOAR, PLEASE bring rain boots if you have them. And an umbrella. And a good rain jacket. Campus is very soggy at the moment.
For those that attended SOAR, how was the experience?
