Hello, my name is Chelsea and I’m very interested in becoming a psychiatrist and am in my junior year majoring in Sociology. My question is, the only science courses I’ve taken during college were at my JC: Chem and Life Science Bio. I’m not going to be able to complete all the necessary science courses before I graduate because the science dept. at my UC is incredibly impacted and it’s increasingly difficult to get into upper div science courses, is it common for students to graduate and then go back to fulfill the needed science courses? I’m not exactly sure what the best way for me to work it out would be, I’ve spoken to the advisers but I go to UC Santa Cruz and even the advisers themselves have the laid-back, don’t rush, just see what happens attitude…essentially not helping me at all. The reason I’m asking is I was thinking it would be better to complete my BA, and then go back after finishing so I could fully concentrate on the science courses instead of having to focus on both my soc major and bio/chem/etc. I wanted to get advice from people who’ve been in this situation, non-bio/pre-med majors whose science courses wouldn’t necessarily be fulfilled through their major.

Thanks so much,
Chelsea
