Stay safe guys!!
Stay safe, everyone!
They have actually cancelled some schools here in San Diego (eastern portion and the mountains) as they are expecting to have to turn off some power lines if the wind does pick up. I am looking out my window at work and the trees are just starting to blow a bit. I hope all the wind they are predicting to the east of us ends up being a non event.
Thinking of all those around LA and Ventura and hope everyone is safe.
Burbank son is OK. Phew it worries me though.
Schools in Santa Barbara also closed today. UCSB is the exception and remains open.
I sent a text message to my kids to make sure they have a full tank of gas and cash.
I read this morning that another fire has broken out in Malibu.
Some people get snow in December. Just sayin’.
I’m mainly worried about Ojai. They were slow to put that under evacuation orders, and there are so few ways out.
D just texted me some pics. Huge clouds of smoke visible from the UCLA campus, and at night you can see flames. One of her foreign language profs is doing the verbal final via videoconference, and another cancelled class because they’re standing by to evacuate.
Having lived there a long time, my heart goes out to all of you.
All classes cancelled at UCLA today. They did it pretty early after getting a lot of online bashing yesterday about being indecisive. Sounds like the air is worse at UCSB even though UCLA is super close to a fire.
Lyft said it its offering free rides up to $40 for wildfire evacuees — taking those affected any evacuation center in the area. Riders need to enter the code: LASAFERIDES in the Lyft app to unlock the discounted trips.
I am especially concerned for the college students who are far from home. And finals are next week for most colleges> I just read that Westmont has cancelled classes for today and tomorrow. A high school classmate of my son’s is a junior there. I know her family in MA will be concerned if they shut down and send kids home. It’s very difficult to rebook flights this time of year.
We are 10 miles fr om one of the fires. Its terribly windy but not as smoky as yesterday. We know people who have lost their homes and more who are evacuated. Schools have been closed for the week. It’s just surreal.
@Massmomm On Westmont’s site they say they are cancelling classes because of air quality. They don’t seem to be in immediate danger otherwise. They are still planning for finals starting next week.
Planes in San Diego were landing from the west and taking off to the east due to high winds. The first happens occasionally due to fog; the second is rare.
UCSB just cancelled classes for the rest of the day too - no danger to the physical campus, but cited uncertainties of the situation and I’m sure air quality played a big part in the decision.
We are on the edge of the Ventura fire and OK for now but hoping the wind doesn’t shift. We have had different people staying with us as they are evacuating. Our daughter’s family and my niece’s family have been here and last night daughter’s sister-in-law’s family was with us. They have been allowed to return home but the smoke is very thick. My brother lives a mile from where the fire originated in Santa Paula and had a couple of tough days. He was supposed to evacuate, but the fire personnel were spread so thin that he stayed and probably saved his home. We know several in Ventura and Ojai who have lost their homes and are so sad for them. Cate School in Carpinteria has been evacuated I believe- I know friends on the south end of Carpinteria left last night. It is hard to believe how fast and how far it has spread so quickly!!!
It is very scary. My D and friends and relatives are in southern CA. Fortunately, I don’t believe the fire is near them but wow, the strong winds are really making it tough for the firefighters and for folks to know when to evacuate and where to go. I haven’t heard back from D but haven’t heard that it’s anywhere near where she lives, so am not worried–yet. She will be flying to be with us in a little over a week–we can’t wait!

The air is perfectly fine at UCLA today. You wouldn’t be able to tell there’s a fire if you didn’t already know. It wasn’t too bad yesterday, actually, though you could smell the smoke.
I am 15 - 20 miles from the fires. We are safe but in the weird position of being almost smack dab in the middle of the semicircle made by the four fires on a map.
The wind has picked up again. It’s pretty scary. Lots of people (including myself) are a little afraid to go to sleep when the wind is howling and the fires are active.
My heart goes out to the brave firefighters who are working on little to no sleep and putting themselves in harms way to protect the rest of us.
San Diego has a fire burning in the north county near interstate 15 and 76 in Bonsall. Over 500 acres burned and structures also. It says wind gusts are up to 50 mph and no containment. We just all received emergency alerts on our phones.
