SoCal fires: Everyone ok?

To my fellow SoCal people

Is everyone ok?

It’s just amazing that fires started in the Brentwood Canyon near the Getty Museum. Totally scary

Hi @bevhills - thanks for asking! We’re west of you/the 405 and while the smoke/particulates are no laughing matter, we are safe. Worried for our friends and neighbors, but safe.

@coralbrook Did you read how a Getty spokesperson said the art couldn’t be any safer, due to whatever air circulation system they have?

Interesting for smoke…but an actual fire reaching the building cannot be good

While I live in Northern California now, I grew up in west LA and still have family there. The pictures of the fire above 405 are terrifying and sobering. I checked on the synagogue I went to growing up and it was evacuated and there was a photo of a person loading a car with torahs. :open_mouth: I hope everyone is able to keep safe.

I live not too far east of the Creek Fire and my daughter is at UCLA near the Skirball Fire. The power went out this morning for awhile on much of the campus, including the Hill (where the dorms and dining halls are), but came back on after a few hours. They cancelled classes for this afternoon, but everything’s supposed to be back to normal tomorrow.

These fires in California have been horrific. It is difficult for me to imagine them in such settles areas, frankly. I keep wishing there would be a huge rain storm.

No rain storm in the foreseeable future. Just a forecast for 60-90 mph Santa Ana winds in inland San Diego county for tonight and tomorrow, essentially no moisture in the air (dewpoints <35 F). Not as bad farther north and closer to the coast but still bad. Hang on tomorrow, be prepared to move, hope for the best.

Stay safe everyone. I know they cancelled classes at UCLA- did they evacuate, too?

So far our friends are safe. Several have go bags. Mr. Ellebud said that he “knew” what stuff he would take. Very professional…legal papers, insurance, jewelry. Me? Pictures of my family, books that I love (some belonged to my grandparents) and some artwork. First in the go bag? Our puppy.

To all: Stay safe.

We got an high wind be aware alert on our cell phones tonight. Air smells of fire. We are north of the Ventura County Thomas Fire. What is crazy is how a fire that started in Santa Paula makes it to the coast. My S works in Carpinteria and the latest voluntary evacuation includes his work location. He said today work was quiet as many of his co workers live in the fire area including his boss.
The scary part is with these winds you just don’t know what you’ll wake up too.

Stay safe everyone!!

@romanigypsyeyes - My DS is at UCLA and his apartment is adjacent to campus. The campus did not evacuate, but the southern edge of the evacuation area is essentially the northern border of campus. Too close for comfort!

In the late 70’s I worked at Camarillo State Hospital with autistic teens.
I drove 52 miles each way from Santa Barbara.
So Beautiful.
I often visited a grad school friend in Ventura.
This fire is very upsetting.
And there is an amazing meditation center called Meditation Mount in Ojai.
It is gorgeous center–hoping it is not going up in flames

I’m north (west) of Ventura’s Thomas Fire. We have a lot of smoke, but are far from the fire. My son has a friend whose family has lost their home in Ventura. Sad to see so many houses burn; it’s usually just a lot of wild acreage. Reminds me of the Painted Cave fire in 1990.

Everyone got a text message notice tonight that Carpinteria (in Santa Barbara County) is under voluntary evacuation. It is odd to be in a public setting when everyone’s phone (even the silenced ones) starts beeping at the same time.

On a Boarding School thread, they were saying that students from Thacher School in Ojai (and very close to active fire lines) were evacuated to Cate School in Carpinteria. I suppose they will re-evacuate now.

The Getty near the Skirball fire looks like a very safe building. They say the art is safe. It is all stone, metal, and glass. Even the gardens are designed to by low in fire fuel. They say the air circulation system is designed to keep out smoke, and they have the buildings buttoned up tight.

We got the high winds alert down in San Diego and I looked at AccuWeather and it said the wind was 0. (We’re on Point Loma so no fears of fire nearby.) Glad to hear the Getty Center is protected.

We made it through the night. Lots of small brush fires were attacked and put out quickly. Our firefighters are the best. The winds were not as bad as predicted last night. But it’s not over yet.

The pictures I saw on Twitter were alarming! I hope they can control the fire soon.

Stay safe, everyone!
