Sochi 2014

Yes, he is done. No medal this Olympics. I read a profile of him a few weeks ago, it seems like he is not having nearly as much fun as he did in past Olympics. Like he has a lot of weight on his shoulders. Wishing for the days of the Flying Tomato again… :(.

Aha! Now we know why he didn’t triumph–it was a Samson moment. Is there a Delilah in the picture?

I find myself rarely tuning in to these Olympics. It’s some combination of having watched so many over the years, a distaste for the Russian government’s use of the games to put a ton of garish lipstick on a particularly ugly pig, and the lack of American medal contenders (not sure if the numbers are down from previous years, but it feels that way). I’m pretty meh on the whole thing. Just old and jaded I guess.

The Flying Tomato looked like a corporate suit with his new haircut. :(

Wow, bookworm! Even though he did not qualify, the fact that he made it this far is still a huge deal! Good luck to your little niece!

Canada vs. U.S. womens’ hockey. Great game so far! Hoping to see my family in the stands.

Thanks, BB. Since this is the first time I’ve known anyone in Olympics, I keep watching for interviews and mention of more than just the expected winner. Shaun has been interviewed many times, why not talk to the other 2 young men on the USA team? Why not introduce the women on the team prior to the competition? All those pre-game picture shoots and interviews will go in the garbage. Well, to be fair, some photos on ESPN.

Somewhere long ago in this thread, another mom, LiliL (sp?) mentioned having a DD there in figure skating. I wonder what happened to her.

Being discussed there, bookworm.

Thanks, alwaysamom; I’m doing the hunt now.

I’m really enjoying Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski doing the commentary for figure skating. And I find myself wondering what Johnny will wear next!

My cousin is doing some of the ice skating commentary too: Sandra Bezic.

Sandra is a good analyst, Bromfield. Another Canadian who is very good is Tracy Wilson. She usually works for NBC and I’m hoping we’ll see her as the skating events go on.

The difference between men and women IMO is being shown most clearly in the half pipe right now. The women’s final is just so much slower and they get no air. It’s extremely boring to watch.

I thought the slope style was the same. The tricks the men did were so much more involved than the women.

Sorry I missed it all, but i suspect it will be shown again tonight. Peter Foley wrote a nice blurb about how the conditions were not good for the Americans, who are used to training in half pipes that are well-designed. He mentioned the other players, with respect. Very thoughtful commentary. My little female cousin too injued during practice to compete. really sad for this families of smart athletes.

So, they just showed cousin’s run with injury.

I just saw that accident. I hope she is recovering well. A disapointment not to be able to compete.

“I’m really enjoying Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski doing the commentary for figure skating. And I find myself wondering what Johnny will wear next!”

Me,too! That pink jacket he had on the other day was something only he can pull off, imo. I’m also enjoying their commentating and banter when I usually am wishing the comms to please shut up…

Bookmom, sorry about your cousins injuries. Hope they recover quickly.

this is a tough choice… olympics or the beatles tribute…

USA sweeps men’s ski slope style!

It’s really awkward that it’s the “extreme” sports part of the team that’s pulling it all together (like, three of the four golds are from snowboarding).

Lots of games on for hockey fans today! USA and Slovakia at the moment.

I am sure that a more knowledgeable CCer will correct me if I am wrong, but I think the USA’s medal success with the winter games has coincided with the inclusion of the “x” game sports. The Miracle on Ice was a miracle because no one expected a bunch of college hockey players to beat the red army. The USSR was dominant in figure skating although th US did have some women who medaled. The Austrians and Swiss dominated alpine skiing while the Scandinavian countries dominated Nordic skiing. I think the Lake Placid Olympics introduced the American people to some sports that they were not familiar with and also gave them a place to train. How common are speed skating, luge, curling, and even bob sledding? As an olympic fanatic of several decades, I wish I had introduced my son to curling years ago so I could be sitting in Sochi right now.
