social differences- williams vs. amherst

what are the differences in terms of partying, drinking, quality of life and so forth? they seem to be completely alike in academic terms, so im just trying to distinguish.

I disagree as to the two being completely alike academically–each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Elaborate on what you mean by “quality of life.” It’s not the same for every person, or every place.

in terms of life happiest students. i mean like “it’s very isolated so the only thing that people do is drink themselves sick”…

oh and i was also wondering how the frat/sorority scene is?

If you are seriously asking how the frat/sorority scene is at Williams/Amherst, you have no chance of getting into either. But you knew that. Nice talking to you. Over and out.

Nice posts today and yesterday, btw. Try studying.

wow, im sorry. and your contribution is??? seriously, if you don’t have anything to add, don’t answer! i’ve gotten plenty of feedback from other people.

what do you mean “nice posts today and yesterday”?

oh and btw, i got into both of them, thank you very much…

“over and out”

dg88:

Did you get in a year early?

yes i did. at this point im still deciding between williams, amherst, brown (no fin. aid tho) and vassar

Maybe Brown doesn’t give fin aid to Hispanic girls who live in both Texas and Illinois

dg88:
ehhhhhh…u joined in March 2006 and quite recently u posted that you are applying ED to Brown…a tad confusing man:S.

Brown has this PLME program or something and i guess you can try visiting Williams, Amherst and Vassar and go to the one you like the most.

dg:
what driver means is that most people applying (and definitely 99.9% of those admitted) to Williams usually know that there is no “frat/sorority scene” there. If you didn’t know, it’s really no big deal. If you applied thinking there was such a scene at Williams, sorry! Although, a lot of us tend to see that as one of the additional merits of the school.

Asking about the “frat/sorority scene” at Williams is a bit like asking about the football team at Bryn Mawr. Frats/sororities/eating clubs etc were banned ~40 years ago, and the ban remains in force. There are occasional rumors of an “underground” fraternity at Williams, but it is apparently so far underground that its meetings are held across the state line in Vermont.

Amherst has similar rules, although I don’t think the rules have been in place for as long as they have been at Williams. Even so, Amherst students probably have access to Greek parties nearby at UMass.

One notable difference between the social scene at Williams and Amherst is the issue of gender imbalance. Both schools enroll roughly equal numbers of men and women. However, Amherst is part of the 5-College community, which as a whole enrolls more women then men, by about 3 to 2.

Moreover, Amherst’s closest social ties within the 5-College community have traditionally been with the two other prestigious liberal arts colleges, Smith and Mt. Holyoke. Both of these, of course, are women’s colleges. If you consider the three LACs in the Amherst area as a group, then there are 6 or 7 women for every man.

The net result is that the social/dating scene at Amherst may be much better or much worse than you might expect from a nominally coed school, depending on your gender and sexual preference.

guys don’t be too rough on dg’s comments- there’s a page in the Williams viewbook- I think the one that comes right before the student life section- that has two of the Williamsy statistic boxes. The one at the top of the page is “how many students coming to Williams say they would be ‘very interested’ in joining a fraternity/sorority,” and then the one at the bottom of the page says, “year fraternities/sororities were abolished.” The number for the first statistic is like 30%!

thank you tophe! my friend told me about “williams sororities” these other day so i figured they were there. sorry about the post. but thanks for some interesting info guys.
