I am an Old Grad who is clearly out of the loop. An interesting rumor is going around that cadets are pledging fraternities and sororities while they are students at USMA if not with the full blessing of the administration, than at least with an awareness.

As you can see from the Facebook photo and links to each name, quite a few of these people are currently students at USMA from the Class of '08 and '09. The picture was posted in May, 2007 before the Class of '07 graduated.

From reading the thread, it sounds like they are there, although not officially and not sponsored or sanctioned by WP. I only see historically minority Greeks organizations. What I have noticed as an adult is the lifetime affiliation of these groups. My sorority days are in the past; I may occassionally attend an alumni gathering, but I do nothing more. However, the ladies I work with who are Deltas are very involved in the organization and its mission to this day. Perhaps therein lies the difference? Anyone who is smart enough to keep grades up at WP and have strong club/Greek affiliation deserves kudos!

Sir, I’m just as surprised about this and I’m currently a plebe; I haven’t seen/heard anything about Greek life here at all aside from academic groups (which I’m not knowledgeable about). Like mom said, if there are social greek organizations like that thread says, they’re definitely underground.

I’m pretty sure that whoever said this is extremely misinformed.

We all know that the corps of cadets itself is a fraternity.

That link should be taken down though, because it is violating someone’s personal page on facebook. Anyone can claim that they are a cadet and say some hogwash about whatever. Those pics could be photoshopped, etc.

BLUF: Fraternities= Corps of cadets.

Close this thread before some innocent cadets get in trouble for the doing of some random person.

I hate to rain on your parade, but there are cadets that pledge into frats at USMA. It happened while I was there, I’m sure it’s still happening today. It’s not a very common thing and it is definately not out in the open, but those photos are not photoshopped, I know some of the cadets and former cadets in them, it’s legit.

As a proud, involved alumna of a woman’s fraternity, I’m all for being Greek in college. However, the federal service academies aren’t just colleges and universities. I can understand a college student pledging at a civilian college and then transferring to USMA (actually not transferring since they do all 4 years but YKWIM). The Greek member turned cadet wouldn’t lose their affiliation with their GLO and they can reconnect as an alumnus/a. It seems like these students in the pictures are joining their GLOs while they are cadets and to me, that’s a big difference. I’m surprised there isn’t some kind of regulation against it. I also don’t understand why there would be the need to pledge as a cadet as the historically black NPHC GLOs have well-established graduate initiation programs.
