Social life at Yale

<p>I was wondering what social life at Yale is like and to what extent it revolves around traditional college parties. From the Yale Daily News:</p>

The report also suggested that traditional Yale events like Bulldog Days and Camp Yale be modified to take the emphasis off alcohol use. Schottenfeld said he has spoken to several admitted students who were so turned off by the amount of drinking during Bulldog Days that they decided not to come to the University.</p>

<p>“Any time that people think that they can’t have a good time without drinking themselves silly, you have to know that there is something wrong,” Trachtenberg said.

<p>Is Bulldog Days representative of social life at Yale? If not, what are the differences?</p>

<p>So there is a lot of drinking at BDD? Is it like against the rules? Or is it sort of a thing the administration turns a blind eye to purposely?</p>

<p>You always hear people say big colleges wheel out the booze and strippers when the athletes come to visit. I guess Yale stops short of the strippers, huh?</p>

<p>This is funny because I noticed when filling out the BDD registration that the first sanction listed for getting caught with alcohol during BDD was simply dismissal from BDD. I expected something more along the lines of “if you get caught drinking, your admission will be revoked. period.”</p>

is there a lot of drinking at BDD?
is there a way to have fun w/o drinking at BDD?
and does BDD accurately represent the amount of drinking at yale?</p>

<p>Apart from noticing a bottle on the desk of his host, my son did not encounter any alcohol use at BDD. I’ve looked up the statistics about alcohol use on college campuses and Yale is about at average, certainly not high up on the list.</p>

<p>There is drinking at Bulldog Days, if only because a lot of students treat at least the Monday of the event like another day of the weekend. If you want to drink, you will be able to…Yale’s attitude toward alcohol focuses almost exclusively on ensuring that students who do choose to drink do so responsibly and without hurting themselves or others.</p>

<p>That said, it is UNQUESTIONABLY possible to have social fun at Bulldog Days (and at Yale in general) if you don’t drink. There is literally some cultural event, show, college activity, sponsored dance, or other event every single night of the semester, and especially on weekends. Many, many students here choose not to drink, but many, many students choose to do it, too.</p>
