social life at Yale?

so what’s it like? I know about the residential college system, but what other unique aspects are there?

As compared to what? The RC system dominates the culture (in a good way) that’s unmatched nearly every where else.

There are always tons of activities – from frat parties to private suite parties to cultural events all the time to trips to area and NYC clubs to theater to cinema to art galleries.

Search the Yale forum archives for “social life” and “parties”. Lots of threads on this.

Athletes, RC groupies, kids who party alot (divided into the rich kids/legacies, frat and sorority members, & athletes), artsy people, international students, DSers, there are a lot of different social groups at Yale, just like at any other college. I greatly enjoyed observing the different groups when I was there, great to see how different people (or types of people since no one is honestly that unique when it comes to social situations) act.

When you get there, you can do a lot. I would say try to divvy up your social time among different groups, but you can just stick to one. BTW during first semester, you’ll drunkenly wander from party to party with a large group of freshman from your RC, and you’ll eventually end up at Toads if it’s Saturday. Just know that is in the cards.

The only thing that’s unique about Yale is that a cappella has parties, particularly BDs, which is always really crowded and hot.

what’s a DSer?

^ Someone who’s in the Directed Studies program.

By and large, DSers are the hipsters. They freak me out

yeah, false. there are a handful of hipsters in DS but most DSers are not hipsters (DSers tend to have a lot of overlap with YPU, Dwight Hall and St. A’s) and most hipsters are too strung out to handle the DS courseload.

I should have been more clear, the majority of people I knew in DS last year were hipsters. I feel that there were more hipsters in DS last year than ever before, but DS is not necessarily a hipster thing every year. Mocha’s right.

Sorry, what’s a hipster?

HAHAHAHAHA, 999999. Youre awesome :P

A Hipster is a person who (in general) wears skinny jeans, American Apparel, awkward looking hats, boat shoes, and has big hair. Theyre often very “chill” people… drinking/smoking is fairly common.

I hate you :stuck_out_tongue: I think “hipster” is an exclusive northern word because I’ve definitely never heard it used in Texas…:(

They have hipsters in Texas, of course.

Hahah thanks guys, I now know what a hipster is. Btw Austin really isn’t a very good example of a stereotypical Texas town ;); nevertheless, I have to say we definitely have “hipsters” we just don’t refer to them by that word. I, at least, have never heard it.
