I’m in the engineering school so I’m a bit worried about the social life… not trying to stereotype or anything but math/science kids usually are lacking in this area… I don’t even know what to expect from girls in engineering (the ones I knew in high school that were nerds for math/science, let me say no comment haha). but I wanna go in open-minded, and outside of that, how much interaction do we get with the LSA/Ross kids?

None. All engineers are easily identified and avoided by all other undergraduates at Michigan. There is a rumor of a member of the CoE actually talking to a girl several years ago, but this is a legend and not confirmed.

Ouch. Good to know what you think of us.

Hey, it’s what you make of it. You can interact with LSA/Ross students if you want to, I’m sure. Freshman year, we have classes like Chemistry, Math, Humanities that will be with LSA students.

“None. All engineers are easily identified and avoided by all other undergraduates at Michigan. There is a rumor of a member of the CoE actually talking to a girl several years ago, but this is a legend and not confirmed.”

On the contrary… People at the CoE are extremely social, and everyone in the college loves to party and socialize, especially with girls. Of course in the end, all the socializing is done in world of warcraft or online.

i don’t know about you people, but from my experience at orientation most of the engineering kids i met were great social people…

yeah, Im just playing with you. Though the CoE looks a little geeky (which it is), there are lots of social people if you simply look around. There aren’t many girls in CoE but there isn’t a defecit or anything so don’t worry too much about “girls”. Your freshman year, you’ll get a lot of interaction with lsa/ross kids since the majority of the time you will be on central campus. Join lots of clubs and you’ll definitely meet some interesting people in lsa/ross/engr.

Guys, I wasn’t trying to be rude, geez I’m in the engineering school! LOL. I just like to be in an environment with people that are balanced, not ones that are just soley focused on their studies ya know? I was just curious that’s all haha, chillax.

no one’s offended man… drop the stereotype and you’ll be fine

I think Michigan as a whole is full of people who are socially inept or once were socially inept and are trying to make up for it. =P

Honestly, as an LSAer, I don’t know that many engineers, but out of the…10 I know (out of…330 Michigan friends on FB…yeah…), they’re pretty cool people. Or maybe more what you’re looking for: a mixed group, of different types of people. Don’t worry about it too much, because if you do, you’ll start to come off as socially inept in so many ways.

At the same time (ahem I realized that what I’ve written so far is…too positive), stereotypes don’t come out of nowhere. Yeah, at the whole, the girls in math/science are probably less attractive than the average Michigan girl, and the average Michigan girl is probably less attractive than the average Big Ten girl, and the average Big Ten girl is probably less attractive than the average SEC girl, but there are always outliers, many or few depending on your own judgment, right? Michigan’s neither USC or Vanderbilt…not known for bikinis and dyed hair or big sunglasses and sundresses, but it’s a huge school with plenty of diverse, interesting people, I would say more so than nearly any school. None of the engineers I know predominately hang out with just engineers, and all of them (besides a couple…) have active, and different, social lives.

That said, the average engineer has more work than the average Michigan student, which I’m guessing you’ve already figured.

^Good post.

Predator, Engineering programs in general are going to have a very low female ratio. Very few Engineering programs have a better than 1:3 female:male ratio. The beauty of attending a university like Cornell or Michigan is that 80% of the students at those universities are not Engineers, so the female:male ratio is more like 1:1.

As for interacting with students from LSA and Ross, why not? Students hangt out with whomever they want. In your dorm, most of your fellow residents will be enrolled in programs other than Engineering. I see you will be living in Bursley. Bursley has a of LSA, Music, Nursing and future Ross students living there, so you will have no trouble mingling.

Are the chicks at Michigan comparable to that of Vandy, UCLA, and such?

I would say the women at Michigan are very attractive, but the winter months do take their toll. Students cannot look as good (less active and no tan) or dress as nicely when it is below freezing.

dude, you are going to meet whoever you meet. for example, i just finished my freshman year and i am in the ross school of business. my girlfriend, who i met in my dorm, is an engineer. she is also easily one of the most attractive girls i have ever seen at michigan. see how it works? it doesn’t matter what college you’re in. your social life is whatever you make of it.

^^ That’s good. Congrats on the girl.
I guess it was a dumb question. There will be attractive women at any college. But I should’ve gone more into depth with it.
Are there more attractive girls than non-attractive girls?

^^^ And that’s not a dumb question?

id say about 1/2 of them are pretty dorky. the rest are ok and completely social. ive met a few good looking girl engineers at umich. dont worry at all alot of times the engineers have a better time than the lsa kids

If you like to go to a school with unattractive girls, then be my guest.
I’m completely the opposite.

There are not many women in the engineering fields as compared to other disciplines. The disparity is larger for some engineering fields as well. For example, there are more women in Mechanical Engineering than in Computer or Electrical Engineering.

Most women in the engineering program are not really “hot”, some are downright ghastly. However, even the butt ugly ones have a long line of engineers waiting in the wings to date them because there are about 23 women to every 100 men in the engineering program.

After you get your prerequisites out of the way, you will be spending most of your time on the North Campus (Siberia) for engineering courses. So if you are looking to find a woman, better try it before you’re pretty much done with Central Campus classes.

Most of all, women at Michigan are notoriously stuck-up. If you are not in a frat or extremely attractive or wealthy, you may have troubles finding a woman who will date you, let alone hang out with you socially.

Don’t stress it if there are no cool women to hang out with, many are just there for studying or hooking-up with frat boys with rich daddies. After you graduate from the CoE, you can become what many people consider “wealthy” in a relatively short time. Then women will be all over you!

As for other social life in general, most stuff happens on the Central Campus, so be sure to make some good friends that are in other disciplines that have classes exclusively on Central. When you start taking actual CoE courses, you will probably need to live on North. Then you can just take a Michigan bus to your buddies place on central Friday evening and take a “Vomit Comet” back to “Siberia” on Saturday at 3AM!
