Social Media, Family & Privacy

I’ll preface this by stating I am not a big fan of a lot of social media. My college/high school children and I use facebook judiciously, but I just don’t get the purpose of twitter unless you’re a celebrity nor do I see the need for constant status updates or photographing and posting every morsel one eats.

So, I am finding that I’ll get home from a family event, Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner for example, and a niece or nephew will have posted photos on Instagram/facebook of the event. These are not posed photos but candids taken without others’ knowledge. It kind of bothers me as it feels invasive.

The fact that some of them are constantly on their phones texting, etc. is a whole other matter. Most of them are in their 20s and not teenagers. My own children are not attached to their phones and don’t take them with them to social events. I am tempted to say something to my young relatives but have held back thus far…

Does this bother others or am I just a luddite?

Like you I use FB judiciously. I have major concerns with privacy for reasons I won’t go into and know that my FB account has been used to invade that privacy in the past. I used twitter recently at a conference. It was kind of neat to get tweets from other conference attendees and learn about other sessions or speakers. I have an instagram account I check regularly. For me FB is mostly about seeing pics of my very young nephews (one is only a few months old). Their parents now post on instagram.

My FB account is set up with the maximum privacy I can achieve. For photos that means I have to approve them before they are tagged. (I think.) If I didn’t have it set up like this, it would bother me. Again, there are some people I just prefer see nothing about my life.

My early 20’s kids have mostly stopped using FB also. They are more likely to tweet to a very limited group of followers.

Like rrah, I have my settings where I can’t be tagged without my permission.

I can’t be tagged without my permission, either.

I have found that I have had to block people who post every fricking thing that is happening to them. I just do not care about all the minutiae.

The younger adults in my extended family have very young kids and new babies - and while I love to see their pictures posted, I do not need to know about every bowel movement the child takes. Not all of them post stuff like that but there are a few serial offenders in my family I have had to block.

A lot of things some people post are, imo, the things one should call up a good friend to talk about - not post for the whole world to see.

These are the old settings. You now approve what can appear on your timeline, and you can untag yourself, but this is still going to show up elsewhere (newsfeeds). I used to really like the feature where I could approve all tags ahead of time. I was nonetopleased when this was changed. I have my settings locked tight, but the person who posts the photo decides on the settings. I have actually asked extended family to go easy on the candids. They are pretty respectful of this. I’d just ask, no big deal.

I was just thinking about this the other day but I was looking at it from a slightly different perspective. I don’t think the relatives/friends who post tons and update everyone on every little thing mean to annoy anyone, it’s just that they are such extroverts that it goes with the territory for them. This is not to say that all extroverts do it, of course not, but I think it contributes to some people not even thinking twice before sharing all the minute details of their lives so publicly. Where I might send someone a private message, they post it on their walls for everyone to see. I am finding that I am using Facebook for example so differently than most people anyway. I actually make sure that most of the time my chat is turned off and nobody can even see that I am online and I mostly use FB for ideas of information based on the pages that I liked. Sounds very strange to most people but I am a total introvert and this is what feels natural to me.
