Social media/social networking major

Hey everyone. Has anyone heard of a social networking major and what it is?

I’ve heard of a “social media” option at some schools. It is an interdisciplinary track utilizing business, communications, computer science, psychology, and statistics. Students can work as data or market analysts, designers, programmers, etc. It is not a common degree option, but some colleges let you create your own interdisciplinary major and you could use that to take the courses you need to obtain necessary skills for this field.

I also have seen some majors that focus on aspects of social media, but it’s not common.
You should look for schools that offer a major in “Informatics” (or similar names, e.g., i"information science", “information studies”, etc.). This includes aspects of computer science, but primarily focuses on the social impact of information technology, including social media.

In one sense, social media also have become just another medium for delivering eyeballs to advertisers, but it has huge untapped potential for analyzing aggregate data for other purposes, too. This aspect of social media can be studied in programs on “data analytics.” These programs are becoming more common and different schools offer them under different tiles and in different academic programs, sometimes under business, sometimes under statistics.
