Social Scene at UIUC?

Hi,

I’m an international student from Hong Kong considering to apply to UIUC as a Business Major.

What I wanted to know is how the social scene is? What can you do? Is there any partying? If so, how much? Is it a diverse community?

Also how’s the campus and academics like?

Thanks in advance!

I’m not a current student, but I do hope to go to U of I. I’ve visited 3 times now with my brother who is a sophomore there and I think I can start to speak about the social life a little bit, but hopefully there’s a student on this board who can help even more.

There is definitely a lot of partying. There is a large base of frats and sororities which have their own parties going on all of the time. Besides that, there are still a good deal of parties around campus to be found. From what I’ve heard, the Greek scene is one of the biggest in the country, so that means that compared to most schools, UIUC probably has more partying.

From what I saw, the school is pretty diverse. Actually, the one thing I noticed was the high concentration of people of Asian descent on campus (compared to my quiet little suburb which doesn’t have much diversity. According to CollegeBoard, its stats are as follows:

<1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
14% Asian/Pacific Islander
7% Black/Non-Hispanic
7% Hispanic
62% White/Non-Hispanic
3% Race/ethnicity unreported

I hope I answered your question at least somewhat. There is a lot of partying going on at U of I, and I’d say that it is fairly diverse.

I’m a senior in high school who can answer a few questions base on extensive research I’ve done on UIUC.

There is a lot to do at UIUC, likely to find yourself entertained on campus or either at one of the downtowns of Champaign or Urbana ( college towns). You seem concern about a large party scene, well I’m not exactly sure how large the party scene is but you will find that most universities have one that exist and easily to find. Though for UIUC its likely to be more prominant than other schools in a way due to its large greek community. The community is diverse in many different ways ( speaking of more than just ethnic groups). Likely a large protion of the students come from the world class city/ greater area Chicago, and 3rd human capitol of the world.

University of Illinois is a great university, usually ranked high in prestige with the other public universities. The campus is also great and unique in its own way.

Thanks for the reply Coolbrezze and Tmac!

I know UIUC is ranked highly, but are the academics actually good? How are the teachers? How is the business school/programme?

Also are there a lot of Indians at UIUC? Is the campus within the town? How far is the closest decent shopping mall (with major brands)? How far is Chicago from UIUC?

Once again, I can’t answer all of your questions, but a few:

There are a good deal of shops and clothing stores on campus that are very accessible. I’d say you could easily take a walk and find one.

Chicago is a long ways from UIUC, about a 3 hour drive. I live in the suburbs south of Chicago and its still about a 2 hour drive to UIUC for me.

Wow. So it does sort of seem in the middle of no where! This slightly turns me off.

Is the town where the campus is located big, or is it just populated with students from the university?

Yeah, to some extent it is in the middle of nowhere. The town outside of the campus and the surrounding area isn’t exactly a big city. From what I know its a lot of farms. But the campus and the surrounding area (pretty large area, almost a city in itself) is pretty big. It is populated with mostly students from the university, with some exceptions.

The cities of Champaign and Urbana surrounding the campus total something around 120,000 people, so it isn’t a small town or anything. It is just that once you get outside of the city, you have 90 min of farmland between you and Indianapolis, 2 hours of farmland between you and the Chicago area, and about 2 hours and 30 min of farmland between you and the St. Louis area. Champaign is somewhat isolated, but the campus itself is fairly urban considering that it is in the middle of Champaign-Urbana.

I see, so it’s in the middle of no where but has major cities close by.

Well I’m sort of looking for a city feel, if not a city feel then at least a university which has a town or something close by or surrounding it where you can go to the malls, cinemas, bowling, etc. Do you think that as a person coming from a place like Hong Kong, I’d like it?

Um… well there are a couple thousand people that came from all over Asia that go there that seem to enjoy it, so culturally, I would say it must not be that much of a shock. It certainly isn’t as densely packed as Hong Kong (not many places are) but it isn’t like you will be moving to Siberia or anything like that.

There is a mall with a decent selection of stores (it is slowly growing too) and two major cinemas to choose from, 4 or so bowling alleys, a fairly robust bar scene and a lot of restaurants for a city its size. I never had a problem finding things to do, though I came from St. Louis, which probably has very little in common with Hong Kong aside from the fact that it has tall buildings.

I just visited. I’m 17 and I found a way into a bar without even showing an ID. I’m not one of those kids who looks like they’re 30 either… So yeah, there is plenty to do there on any given night.

So that means you were at C.O. Daniels or the Clybourne most likely then? haha
