Can a current student explain how the social scene works at CMU? Not necessarily the party scene, but more like what are the different cliques like, what people are in them, and if there’s a lot of friendships cross majors.

I don’t know if there’s any real cliques at CMU, though I guess you’ll see various international groups that are fairly tight since they won’t speak much English. I think most people wind up developing friends within their own major, so they have people to work with on problem sets, as well as people outside their major so they don’t have to see the same people 24/7.

Best way to meet new people is just talking to tons of different people freshman year. Sit down with different people while eating every day, leave the door open to your dorm room whenever you’re in there, and drop in to say hi to anybody on your hall that has their door open.

will freshmen living in all-freshmen dorms be friends with mostly freshmen? How much interaction is there between upper-classmen and under-classmen?

If you get involved in clubs you’ll probably make friends with people outside of your year. Also as you start taking upper-level electives you’ll have people older than you when you’re a sophomore/junior and people younger when you’re a junior/senior in your classes. You might also get to know upperclassmen from working in labs at the same time.
