Sociology for Urban Planning / Development?

<p>Hey all,</p>

<p>I’m thinking about studying sociology at UChicago. Do you think that would give me a good background for urban planning / development, or perhaps law school? I know the whole “you might end up doing something completely irrelevant to your major” argument, but it doesn’t answer the question well. Otherwise, what major do you think I should look into if I ultimately want to restructure developing urban neighborhoods / do research in that area? <p>Also, if I study sociology, would it be hard for me to get into grad school for psychology without the background in biology?</p>

<p>Yes, sociology would be an appropriate undergrad major if you wanted to go into a grad program in urban planning or to law school. Other relevant UC majors for grad work in urban planning would include Geographical Studies or Public Policy Studies.</p>

<p>Admission to grad school in psychology from an undergrad sociology major depends on what area of psychology you want to study. If you want to study social psychology, it might be possible. If you want to study other areas, you’d be less competitive relative to other applicants. </p>

<p>Professional schools of psychology are more likely to accept applicants from a more diverse range of non-psychology backgrounds than research-based or scientist-practitioner departments.</p>
