Sociology major

Does anyone know how good the sociology department is at Yale???

Also, what majors other than political science are outstanding at Yale?

Polisci, IR, economy and definitely history are very strong.

We actually have a very small sociology department, but the professors we have are extremely good. If you’re sure about sociology, the best graduate schools are UChicago, Madison - but to be frank, chances are high you will end up changing majors anyway; even if you don’t, undergraduate direction matters very little if you’re applying for grad school (which you almost have to with a field like sociology).

Edit, the reason I mentioned good grad schools is that many universities tend to make it harder for their own undergrads to apply to the graduate program (they strive for good circulation and diversity from other institutions). So going to a so-so sociology department place but good overall institution for your B.A. is the best route.

So would I be better of putting down another possible major… or undecided instead of sociology on my app (since you said the department is small)

It’s irrelevant what you indicate since most students change majors. Freshmen aren’t admitted based on what they propose to be majors. At an info session, the Admissions rep said the major listed was only a point of interest about you – it played nothing in their decisionmaking process.

LOL: I think I indicated “Biology” many moons ago! PM me if you REALLY want me to tell you when I filled out my Yale app!

Put down sociology if that’s what you are interested in. It honestly doesn’t matter that much - if you find the department unsatisfying once you get here, simply switch.

I’m in sociology and I’m very happy with the size, actually. Since there are so few of us opting for that major, there is better bonding with the instructors and the department head.

^^ thanks! that was helpful!!
