Soft major? What about AIT?

There were alot of people on this board that said that my major of sports and recreation management was soft and would hurt me getting into law school. What if I double majored? Would this help, and make schools look better? What if I majored in Sports and Rec. Management and Applied Information Technology? Would this help? Please respond!!!

no, you are doomed.

sorry, I couldn’t resist. I’d look for a more traditional major…computer science, anyone?

I am seriously asking a question here wildflower. Applied information technology is basically computer science.

The same individuals who claim sports and recreation management are “soft” majors have gone on a tirade at the thought that history is also looked upon in the same light. What “looks better” is what interests you. Admissions reviewers can see right through those that major in a field for the sake of grades alone. Okay, Eric, jonri and the rest of you…calm down…take a deep breath.

Hey Ricz, thanks alot for your reply. I personally dont see Sports and Rec. as a soft major. I am taking challenging classes like Sports law and Sports programming. I also am taking challenging courses because I am a member of the Honors Program. I am definately not taking a sports and rec major because its easy or for grades, it is the thing I have wanted to do since I was little. I do it because I love sports, not because its easy.

hmm… what’s wrong with potentially wanting to be, say, a sports agent? not that a law degree is absolutely necessary to be one, but it’s a good boost according to a sports agent that i know.

That’s excellent, danesporty. Take a look at the curriculum in this field at schools like Texas A&M, University of Houston, Georgia State, etc. There is no such thing as a “soft” major if it is what interests you.

Hey Ricz, I was looking at some smaller schools in Florida like Stetson and Nova Southeastern. What do you think about chances at those schools? Also do you have AIM or a screen name?

danesporty - send me a PM with your e-mail address and I’ll provide you with my contact information.

danesporty, I wouldn’t worry too much about this if you’re aiming for those Florida schools. If you wanted to go to Stanford or Yale, I’d have different advice, but schools like Stetson see lots of majors outside the liberal arts, and I doubt this will be an issue for you.

IT and CS degrees are two completely different majors. Yes, both deal with computers, but then the similarities end there. I know I spoke with an admissions officer at a prestigious law school, I told him I was indecisive which end I wanted to go with. He then told me that the people that graduate with IT degrees, more than half of them are there because they couldn’t handle the math and intensive logic found in the CS major/field.
They are honestly, two completely different majors.

“There were alot of people on this board that said that my major of sports and recreation management was soft and would hurt me getting into law school. What if I double majored?”

I don’t think your major is soft. You should double major if the other major will give you top grades. Double major worked for me because I am good at two areas and that’s about it.
