Soft Skills

I think I’m pretty good with people. I’m not arrogant, my coworkers like me, those I supervise are great and eager workers because I respect them, etc… This is a point of contention because I know that most engineers are awful at interpersonal communication and the like, and being an engineer I am sure I am going to face these prejudices (which are rightly given).

Just wondering if there is anything I should be doing/taking/training/whatever that would be a good indicator to future employeers that I am proficient in these soft skills? Clubs, class, programs, charities, etc.?

Not sure, but these are points that could be addressed in your letters of recommendation received and also your essays.

For admissions yes. However, I am already accepted to a school and am more concerned about proving to a potential employeer that those skills exist.

You can show your soft skills to your advantage during the interview process. Many firms require prospective applicants to go through a lengthy interview process possibly speaking to a substantial number of people who will directly or indirectly working with you. These are great opportunities to reveal your best qualities.

Depending where you attend school, you should have plenty of opportunities to demonstrate your soft skills to employers.

At top schools, you may have 3 or 4 (or more?) companies on campus a night. These generally involve a presentation and then a “meet and greet” situation. Additionally, there are tons of other social interaction opportunities with employers: career fairs, guest speakers, alumni functions, football games/tailgates (if u have them), case competitions, etc etc etc. Hell, just last night I ran into an MBA recruiter in my apartment complex (visiting his daughter).

Soft skills are extremely important in the recruiting process and if you have them it will show.
