Solution Number One

Pass an amendment to the Constitution prohibiting any religion from teaching intolerance of other religions. Pass a statute making it a criminal offense for an individual acting on behalf of a religious organization to teach intolerance of other religions.

Captured by aliens – forced to eat Wild Duck.

Is there a clear line between banning intolerance and being intolerant yourself?

you can’t amend the constitution to have it control what other religions can and cannot teach… there’s a thing called “separation of church and state”
besides, usually the religion itself doesn’t teach intolerance necessarily, it’s extremists who take it there, which would make your second sentence slightly more possible than your first, though you’d still be violating free speech rights

A lot of this strict adherence to principle really gets in the way of doing what’s obviously right.

Being open-minded does not include tolerating intolerance. It just doesn’t. Intolerance needs to be punished, I agree. Being tolerant isn’t a state of agreement with a idea, action, or lifestyle - it’s simply a sign of respect. And the second that intolerance is allowed to spread through this ploy of “free speech,” hatred and hate crimes are the inevitable result.

Knightmare-What scares me about “banning intolerance” is that what the government would be doing is prosecuting someone for what they think, not what they do. Clearly hate crimes should be punished (whether they should have stronger penalties or not is up for discussion), but punishing someone just for hating? What about, say, a Holocaust survivor who has been left with an irrational hatred of Germans?

When it comes to free speech, I find it very hard to disagree with the writings of J.S. Mill. His “On Liberty” is an incredibly convincing argument for unfettered freedom of speech.

4 year bump

Yeah, no one ever replied to me. :'(

A good rule of thumb on the internet is that you’re not allowed to bump a topic from before you joined.
