Some advice

I’m a sophomore in HS and I’m in Trig honors (the junior course) as well as other higher level classes. However, my average isn’t so great, probably a 93 at best when unweighted, and my math averages are particularly low, the past two years have seen both 91’s and this year i predict a 93 or so. English is really killing me and i have a 83 in English honors (a complete drop from a 99 in english honors freshman year). Next year i plan on taking AP Stats and pre calc honors. Standardized test wise i project a 2100 about (based on diagnostic exams) and i received a 28 on the PLAN. I’m really lacking a solid extra curricular base, being only in Math honor society and Science Olympiad, but i do wrestle and i log about 40 hours of community service a semester TAing at a certified korean school.

My question is, where do i go from here? I know its too late to try and get active in extracurriculars starting junior year and i pretty much know my math averages are screwed. Should i drop my fourth year of spanish next year and take up a Marketing course? The marketing course itself is for kids who want easy credit but my school always does well at DECA (a business competition i believe) and i thought it might be more worth it than a fourth year in spanish. Also should i go into English 11 and get a higher grade to boost my GPA or should i go with English 11H?

It’s been my goal to get into a top business school after my cousin graduated BC two or three years ago double majoring in Accounting/Financing and got a starting salary of 59K at deloit and is now making 75K a year. However, he did a lot better than me in High School and i don’t know if i’ll be able to get into a top business school which scares me to death. But it’s hard i guess to compare anything to my cousin really; his friend who graduated along side him also got a job at deloit but received a starting salary of 40K.

Don’t drop a fourth year of spanish for a marketing course. Colleges like to see you in core classes. Even though you’re applying as a business major they would still rather see a foreign language. If you have an extra elective take marketing, for example, rather than weight training or basketball. You should take your fourth year of spanish next year and fifth year the year after.

If your cousin started at 59k and his friend at 40k then they are probably working in a differetn department and different division at deloitte.

I would take English 11H and work my ass off to get a good grade. Colleges prefer honors/ap courses.

As far as extracurriculars, who says you do not have a solid base? That sounds like a pretty solid base to me. Secure leadership positions and you will be fine. You might also want to pick up a part-time job. For, the summers make sure that you do something important. Don’t just sit around all summer. Attend a summer program or work an internship. The summer after your junior year you should go to LEAD program in business. You can google that.

Good Luck.

i don’t know, two clubs just seems like too little to me.

As for the summer i got selected for an NCLS and i’m unsure if i should go to a university for that or just apply for a regular precollege.

But do i meet the requirements to go to a top business school? i really feel like my lower math averages are going to kill my chances.

Admissions committees don’t want you to have 10 clubs, that you don’t really participate in. They can tell when someone joins random clubs just to put on their college application. They will prefer a candidate with two or three SOLID extracurricular activities, which means that you partcipated for two to four years, hold leadership positions and are active in the organization.

It looks like your english averages hurt you more than your math averages…

I’m trying really hard but less than 10 people all of his English 10H classes gets A’s…the teacher is a real d*ck.

I was planning on going the accounting/finance route like my cousin but i was wondering what marketing majors do after college. Is it true that after making it in marketing, they are usually the top corporate exec’s that get to relax and lead a rather stress free life? I know you can’t generalize but i was just wondering what the career path of marketing majors went. I’m into art a lot and if it pays enough i think i might want to get into advertising/marketing and be able to create commercials and stuff. Plus marketing/advertising board meetings seem kind of fun lol.

Thanks.

Also, i got accepted into a nation student leadership conference program for the summer. The only offered programs for business are at Fordham university in international business and entrepreneurship. I was wondering if i should go to that(since its business in general) or spend my summer at sat prep/comm service/chill/part time job like i had planned.

Do the program at fordham, thats a great way to spend your summer. how long is the program?

and as far as marketing, marketing majors usually make the least amount of money out of college. Finance and accounting majors usually make the most money. I’m not sure how marketing majors dow 5-10 years out of college, but considering numbers only finance and accounting are where the money is. But, if you’re not into accounting don’t do it. Do what you’re interested in.

the fordham program runs about 4 weeks i believe.

but i was told that programs like this don’t really help you out during admissions.

Who told you that? It’s not going to mean that you’re automatically into harvard or anything, but it definitely means something to admissions. They will see that you’re doing something over your summer break that is educational and they will like it a lot. The one program that WILL mean a lot is the LEAD program in business. heres a link LED

You can attend this program at different top business schools including Wharton, Tuck, Stanford GSB, Kellogg, Fuqua, Johnson, Ross, UIUC, McDonough, Darden

It actually will hold some weight on your college app. Do it the summer after your junior year.

The fordham thing you should definitely do. AdComs will like to see it, and because it is only four weeks you can still work and prepare for your SATs as well.
